I'm looking for a helmet to replace the one I've been using for the past four years, but I don't know which brands to consider. I'll narrow the selections by saying that I'm in the market for something light weight, but strong and I want a full face, but with the flip-up front (not just a flip-up shield). Easy integration of some of the newer gadgets might be a consideration. Price: sub $250.

Any recommendations?

Just bought a Nolan N102 flip-up $209.00 shipped. For my head it is a perfect fit. Probably its only negative, so far, is it is a little noisy, not bad but you will want your ear plugs if you run with the windshield down.

As a former Parts Manager for a motorcycle dealer, I will offer the same advice that I gave my customers:

Don't concern yourself so much with any brand name. The most important concerns are:

1. PROPER FIT

2. YOUR BUDGET

Take your time and try on as many modular (flip front) helmets as you can find at local dealers before you make a decision.

I bought an Icon helmet last year and I'm not too happy with the comfort. It seemed fine at the dealer when I tried it on but after abou 30 minutes it starts to hurt my ears. On an all day ride it gets pretty bad. Other than that it fits good. I like my old Arai much better but it was much more expensive.

I bought a Nolan N-100 based on published reviews and recommendations.

I was attracted to the flip-up and not having D-rings.

But, in the end, the noise was just too much.

Once I noticed the roar at Highway speed, I couldn't stop being irritated by it.

I switched to an RF-1000 (which others say is noisy).

But, it is a tomb compared to the Nolan flipup. Music and intercom are much better.

I think the noise is a design feature in the seams on all flip-ups.

Also, cooling airflow management is often much better in the full faces.

Shoei and other top brands have almost mastered this feature.

If your planning any major highway time, reconsider the full face.

The new Scorpion EXO-1000 looks very interesting.

A communicator almost completely eliminated the advantage of a flip-up for 2-up riding.

Although, that's another $300+ out the window.

One hint: HelmetHarbor does a real nice job of reviewing and comparing all their helmets.

I've read good things about the HJC Sy-Max flip. Here's one from Web Bike World.

I have an Icon Alliance Aggressor but helmet fitment is only slightly worse than "what is a comfortable saddle?" as far as to what fits who.
I'd have to agree to that considering everyone's head (and attached components) is different.

Agree you should try as many as you can before buying. ride over to Daytona and check Cycle gear at ISB and Bill France. Then the helmet shop on Ballough just north of the beemer dealership. Helmet shop has internet pricing and good selection. Got my N102 from them and love it in the heat. Noisy though as already said, earplugs or etymonics work well

Builder Bob I am Bob the Builder and my Nolan flip up says it and I like it mucho mucho much.

He is on my helmet

When you look for a flip up things to check look at the areo dynamics at how the air flows to the shield and how it passes over where the face shield joind the frame work of the helmetand look how the fir is for the frame to the helmet boddy . What happens the helmet is not noisy inside, it is how the air flows over the helmet and catches the corners of where ever there is a joint or point of opening and closing of the flip up part and the shield as on a Nolan.

Mine is quite but I also where ear plugs . Info may help or may not good luck
