This one is hurting in real time as I type this.

On the way home, back road, silent roadway, 2 lane hiway -

From no where

OK, I was changing the XM channel ..

looked up and

WHACK

Bird strike to the helmet shield.

Snapped my neck back, nothing but cloudy skies in the vision.

No big deal really, but damn, I have a serious head ache and my lower right filling is loose.

All from a small bird.

I'm fortunate - no crash aka LAWinter.

But damn, I have one sore neck/head.

Lesson Learned?

Nothing I can think of..

That's what you get for changing channels. Don't you know you're supposed to just pick one and stay there?

Glad the occasion didn't end differently...

Ouch! Glad you're OK Don. I wouldn't want to hit a bird with my head at speed.

Do you think the visor makes it worse then just glancing off the top of the helmet or the upper shield?

Ouch! I hope your neck is OK.

When God gives Carver the bird, he doesn't mess around.

I know I've dodged some big birds over the years. Lucky, so far.

Had a small bird smack the windshield one time at 70+...nothing but feathers. Can't imagine one hitting my helmet.

Glad you're relatively OK Don! Take a couple Advil and get a bigger windshield in the morning. ;)

Ouch. now you have some idea what a few racers have felt when they hit a seagull at Phillips Island in Australia during a race weekend at 180 mph...

But I guess that is much better than a forest rat, (jes sayin') ;)

Seagulls, yes I know all about those *******s. I hit one at 260kph on the Phillip Island circuit 2 years ago at the afterburners ride day [ Monday after the sunday GP ].

Bloody thing almost knocked me out cold & destroyed my 5 day old Shoei X-11 helmet. Had just enough in reserve to finally roll to a stop, park the R1,& basically collapse. F^#*ed up an otherwise awesome couple of weeks riding.

I think you should have cried fowl. :D
+1, Gunny! Very glad that you're OK Don, but I'm going to have to report you to the SLO CO Branch of PETA. Between Toecutter killing rabbits, and you being instant death to deer and birds; you two are a wildlife ecological disaster in the making! What's next, going to run over a llama or an ostrich? Any dog strikes yet? Ya *******!

https://www.rosensrides.com/about-us.asp Actually, bird to helmet strikes are no laughing matter. Dan Rosen, Founder of Rosen Rides based here in Arizona, was killed in 2000 down in Mexico's Copper Canyon region when a turkey vulture flew up out of a drainage ditch alongside of the roadway. The buzzard hit Dan's helmet, and his neck was either broken by the strike or when his BMW R100GS hit the pavement. RIP Dan!!!

Glad you are OK Don! I've hit birds with a glancing blow before but never dead on. I just missed getting a turkey in the chest a couple of weeks back as a flock of them were flying across the road. I can only imagine that would have resulted in some very serious injury.

So your question is whether a direct hit is worse than a glancing blow? Hmmm. :p
