I kinda like the way not wearing a helmet has disproved my face. I get better service whereever I go.....haven't tried the ***** bars yet so...wait for a better response.

I think this forum alone has caused me to really take gear seriously.

I am acquiring good gear 1 piece at a time. It's not cheap to get good protective gear, or else I would just buy everything at once.

Good thinking, thought the $1200 for my leather suit was steep, but after two crashes, one track related and one on the street, I am more than happy for the money I spent! I don't always wear "atgatt" but it's mandatory if I'm goin riding with the buds who ride at more elevated speeds! I still have to send it in to Vanson for shoulder seam repairs or panel replacements, but will gladly pay the bill as it will have been much cheaper than a knee replacement and broken bones and/or sitting in a wheelchair! The spine protector needs 4 new plastic connectors due to going over the bars at the track @ 70-80mph. Walked away with a slightly fractured wrist. :)

Not my experience. I tossed aside my $500.00 Shoei for one of these at only $90.00 after an extensive research investigation.

I actually had that helmet in black, and I liked it. I sold it 2 bikes ago because I thought it would look funny wearing it on a cruiser. I thought it was a great helmet, nothing amazing, but I paid like $90 at the dealership for it and was very happy.

 
Hughes "Proficient Motorcycling" shows a chart rating helmet damage by % of incidents. The two chinbar sides (left and right) accounted for ~30% of helmet impacts. I think the chart was originally from the Hurt Report.

Sorry to ruin the good times with an attempt at factual information in a helmet thread... :)
the figure is posted here click a few pages down - 34.6% on the chin bar -- I'll stick with the full face, thx. I'm ugly enough as it is...

Have and will always ridden w/ a full face. Have fallen on my face (literally)more than once, Don't wanna think about how it would have been with an open face helmet. I can recall several instances where other riders ended up having their face cut by the face shield.

 
Kart racing requires SNELL approval also and is subject to hits in many areas, no roll bar and you usually are thrown away from kart in major speed crash. From my experience with crashing , it seems you are usually in control of where your head is going to hit & can control it to a cetain extent....

So are you implying that all those (34%) people are choosing to go in face first?
 
Man, in an accident, the only control is that where the head goes, the *** generally follows. (most of the time)

 
I remember my EMT training about 25 years ago when full faced helmets were really just becoming popular. They were refered to as neck breakers and the point was really driven home at the time when a co-worker did a chin plant and snapped his neck. This isn't meant to derail all the good info supporting full faced helmets, they're all I wear, but there's a down side to everything and crashing can kill you no matter what you wear.

So with the knowledge of how often riders are landing on the chin bar area, I now am wondering about making the switch from my full face to the new flip face from Shoei. (Multitec). I was planning on getting a new helmet this coming season, and was split between the Multitec, and going with an Aria, which would be the fist time I have had anything but a Shoei. A flip face has to be weaker for chin bar area impacts, but is it enough so to make a difference? I know, if you have to ask, ya-da, ya-da, ya-da. But the convenience of a flip face would be nice as well.

About 13 years ago, I was riding down route 66 (Foothill Blvd) in the early AM @ about 50mph and a brand new truck pulled out of nowhere into my path. My front tire planted into the passennger door, the rear of the bike came around and crushed my leg between the bike and the r/f fender of the truck, and my face smashed the front windshield. Thankfully I was wearing a full face helmet, although the helmet did push back into my chin causing a couple of broken molars.

I had always worn a full face helmet until Feb of 05' when I bought a cruiser and purchased a half helmet and a 3/4 helmet. My instinct kept telling me "this just isn't right". Now those two helmets sit on the shelf and I always wear my full face no matter which bike I'm on. To each his own...

Maybe it was so new that it materialized in that spot that you were about to occupy. Was there a driver? Jim Morrison perhaps?
Somebody call the Weekly World News! Christ, if vehicles can do that it's probably time to sell the bike and join Eve in a new FJ Cruiser!

Screw the helmets, we're gonna need more air bags!!!
