What do you guys think about safety with these helmets?

I wear this during the summer on really hot days, but have debated that it would really keep me safe. I still think it's much better then a half-helmet, like one of those HD domes.

I've seen enough bashed chin bars on full face helmets to scare me away from open face helmets. I like my face. And some friends came across a motorcycle crash last summer where a guy did a face plant and slide wearing something similar. He was face down in a pool of blood expanding from where his face used to be. Gives me the shivers. I think modern full face helmets have enough ventilation to be cool enough.

We all ride with the gear we're comfortable in, though. I think that all these "You're only safe if you wear this" arguments eventually lead to not riding bikes altogether. It's a risky sport no matter what you wear. You're right that it's better than a half helmet.

If you don't value your nose, jaw, teeth - about half your face - these are fine.

I like being able to taste and chew too much to wear one of these... On the other hand, if I need one that bad, Ill probably be screwed anyway.

It's perfect if you never fall off or if you live in a state with helmet laws and you want to smoke while riding, but if you are interested in safety, DRESS FOR THE CRASH, NOT FOR THE COMFORT.

I have every intention of never scuffing any of my gear, but you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men.

TurboDave, what do you wear? :cigar:

This Dave wears this

Scorpion EX-200, wonderful helmet, love it. Hate full face helmets-it's this or nothing.

Your name is Dave? You know, in my minds eye, that just don't fit. Now, Roscoe would be more like it.

Hughes "Proficient Motorcycling" shows a chart rating helmet damage by % of incidents. The two chinbar sides (left and right) accounted for ~30% of helmet impacts. I think the chart was originally from the Hurt Report.

Sorry to ruin the good times with an attempt at factual information in a helmet thread... :)

I used to wear a 3/4 all the time & couldn't see wearing one of the full face kind because I just knew that it would cut down on my vision & make me feel claustrophobic. My BMW riding bud would occasionally whine at me about it (nicely of course).

After reading about how wide the field of view was in a Nolan helmet I figured I'd buy one & try it & see how it went.

Haven't worn the 3/4 helmet for a year now...

Guess this baby is going on ebay....

I think this forum alone has caused me to really take gear seriously.

I have only been down 1 time in my earlier years of riding, but it was only at about 10 mph. I got lucky and only got some minor rash on my knees, and a sprained ankle. Ever since then I think I've underestimated the consequences of a low speed lay down, but even 10-25 mph can do some serious damage... A lot of it depends on how end up hitting the ground.

I am acquiring good gear 1 peice at a time. It's not cheap to get good protective gear, or else I would just buy everything at once.

Thanks for the advice.

the figure is posted here click a few pages down - 34.6% on the chin bar -- I'll stick with the full face, thx. I'm ugly enough as it is...
