Ha ha ha ha. Helmets, tires, suspension settings - one may's joy is another's nightmare.

I have a thin head and big ol ears sticking out. Oh, the nicknames I could recite when growing up........ Wingnut. Dumbo. Howdy-Doody. Alfred E Newman........ The list goes on..........

I have found two helmet companies that fit my head: HJC and Shoei. I don't even bother with any others anymore. If it works, it works. I wear a size small for both.

HJC definitely has more of a pocket for the ears - probably because of less outer shell sizes than Shoei, but for the most part the Shoeis don't give me problems. Anything pushing on my ears will cause discomfort, and then lots of pain after hours in the saddle. I can't use helmet speakers for that reason. Can't get them close enough to my ears for them to work well without causing pain. So, for 20 years now I have been using earbud speakers. The S-Plugs are by far the best as they are the smallest and softest. I can wear them for hours upon hours. Of course the other huge benefit is that the music or phone sound quality is going to be an order of magnitude better than helmet speakers, either with, or without earplugs.

Original Neotec fit good. A little loose after years of wear. Neotec 2 fits well too. Smaller pocket for the ears, or located a little different but that doesn't cause me much of an issue as long as I am careful except for one thing. The wire coming out of my ear for the S-Plug. I have to make sure I route it a certain way otherwise the Shoei interior pad will push the wire against the lower part of my ear and after a few hours, pain! Oh, and I always use a skull cap/helmet liner. Both as a sweat barrier, and to assist in putting on, and taking off the helmet with the earbud speakers in my ears.

The HJCs I don't have the wire issue. The ear pocket is bigger or the padding is more loose.

The old HJC IS-Max fit great! I prefer the Shoei quality but the HJC is a great value. I use them for my summer helmets here in Arizona when I am always sweating and replace them every two years. The high $$$ Neotecs I use for winter/touring and keep them a lot longer.

Unfortunately, the I90 was not an improvement for me. I get pressure on my forehead and some discomfort on long days. Also, it's much more difficult to install my Sena headset mount. The tinted sunshade mechanism on the I90 uses a cable inside the left side of the helmet. When I installed the Sena mount I fubar'd the cable. Luckily, a nice gentleman at HJC USA sent me replacement parts for free and walked me through the replacement on the phone. I now use the stick-on mount but it doesn't last. :( What a pain in the ass! I miss the old IS-Max! Eventually, I guess I will try the new I91. It is nice to have a cheaper helmet for my everyday use, especially in the summer when sweating a lot. I bought my I90 from Chromeburner in Germany back in 2020. Got it in a cool Hi-Viz color that they don't offer here in the USA. It matches one of my equally obnoxious Aerostich Roadcrafter suits! There are some things you just can't un-see!!! :D:D:D

Any thoughts about what in particular makes Shoei helmets particularly quiet? There is a zero percent chance my head fits in any high end helmets, but the HJC i90 3-5xl shell size I can fit my head into has a fair amount of play room side to side, and I just stocked up on them before they disappeared as they were recently discontinued and I would be interested in doing some minor modification experiments.

Interesting, have you ever used this style of plug?

The outer design looks similar to the S Plugs you linked. They are open though so maybe more like the filtered S Plugs that let some frequencies through although supposedly block the more damaging frequencies. They come with a "launcher" that is basically a little tube that helps you shove them deeper into your ear canals and overall they are the most comfortable earplugs for long term use I have ever used. The foam style particularly are a hard sell for me long term as they start to feel sweaty, itchy, and make me feel stuffy pretty quick.

If you have ever used a style like this I would be interested in your opinion on how they compare to the S Plugs you linked. These are very convenient as I can use them with helmet com speakers rather than fishing wires and messing with plug connections, but if the S Plugs really are substantially better they might be a future consideration.

There is no way those would work for me with that protrusion sticking out. Sometimes, I turn off the music while wearing my S-Plugs and they act just like a normal earplug. And every rare once in a while, I will skip the S-Plugs and just go with the foam earplugs.

It amazes me the folks who ride with no ear protection. It's loud in that helmet folks! Even if is just white noise/background noise. And hearing loss is permanent! DAMHIK!

P.S. Prep the surface with denatured alcohol before applying adhesive tape. Then use 3M VHB tape. It will stick.

I definitely prep with alcohol. I will try the 3M tape. IIRC, the adhesive pulls away from the Sena mount and not the helmet surface. It just doesn't fit quite right and one side is always under tension pulling away. I tried a superglue assist, but that only worked for so long......

If I90 HJC works for you Shoei will probably not. I have big ears in size generally. Arai Corsair, Scorpion, helmets do seem to work because they are a bit roomier at my ears.

Shoeing IS the quietest because there is no extra room at the ears. That is why the little extra rubber or vinyl sections are built into the helmet at the ear location. I can wear them but if I remove and replace the helmet four or five times in a day I my ears will feeling I have tried to unzip them from.my skull as many times.

If you have nice ears flatformed to your skull go for it. Shoes rules. If you have radar dishes buy a nice quality helmet like Arai and begin your masterpiece build around your ears from some very good helmet accessorie products. I find that nice custom additions help also
Been doing it for years.
Am I the only one wearing a helmet liner? It’s thin, moisture-wicking and protects my ears when putting my helmet on. Keeps the inside of the helmet clean too!

Until it got wet, right? I have yet to find a glue that holds to ABS plastic. I attached VHB to ABS and it has held for years. Don’t ever want to see my SENA bouncing on the road behind me.

No doubt! Several times it has let go and I feel it hanging/bouncing around with only the wire for the microphone keeping it from being sacrificed to the Moto Gods!
