Helmets...now I understand

I have question for him....why do all motor sport participants use them?
Sleazy covered that. He mentioned one death that he claims was directly the result of wearing a helmet, it is implied that if the NASCAR driver had not been wearing a helmet he would have been unharmed. Now to draw a line from only one point -- helmets kill, even in motor sports. :glare:
Earnhardt's next snapped because he wasn't wearing a neck brace or a Hans device....not because of a helmet
Plus the cumulative effects of several earlier wrecks he was in where concussions were evident

In a car you are straped in, which allows you neck to snap. On a motorcyle if something impacts either your body or head hard enough to cause the same kind of snap you have bigger problems. I like how he states that if he plows into someone doing 55 the helmet wont help him...REALLY? NO ****!! I don't care what you are wearing, if you hit something that doesn't give at all, and therefore go from 55 to 0 almost instantly, you are going to hope you are dead.

Racing on the road when I was a kid I have done this, me and the bike moved a van sideways 4 feet. I decelerated from 58mph to zero in the space of 4 feet. (where the needle stuck on the speedo which coincided with my guess at the speed I was doing). I didn't go over the top because it was a van and landed on the floor on the side of the van that I hit.

I wasn't knocked out and remember the sensation to this day. It felt like you would imagine it would feel if you stood in the path of a train, is the nearest I can get to describing it. Like being hit by a baseball bat on every part of your body all at once. I broke a femur and a tooth and had cuts and bruises. For 2 weeks after I hurt just about everywhere, even my teeth hurt if I tried to chew anything. Couldn't **** for a week and had a catheta for peeing. They said that it was shock that had caused the stoppages.

The only funny thing was after a week they gave me a supossitory to get me moving just before visiting time. I had to use a bed pan and stunk the ward out, I could see all the other guys pointing me out to their grimmacing visitors.

My point being, because the Brit law says you have to wear a helmet, I had one on. It had a couple of marks on it but nothing big because it hit the bodywork of the van and not the floor.I am certain it saved my life that day.

Oh, I see. You are a spokesman for the general masses, protecting me and others like me from doing harm to ourselves. Life is risk vs reward. We all make our own choices. I have approximately 450,000 miles on bikes over the last 30 years, some with required helmet, some without, and I'm still here. Guess this ******* is just plain ole lucky! I also jump out of airplanes without use of an AAD, and some say that is just plain ole stupid. I have noticed that the ones that claim its insane are the ones with fewer than 100 jumps, the veterans just keep their opinions on this to themselves. I also fly ultralights, and some say that its crazy. Those with that opinion usually dont fly them. I scuba dive with an "ancient" Calypso , non octupus, regulator. Some say thats crazy. It's been working for me since 1978, so I guess again I'm just plain ole lucky! I may need to head out to the casino! Don't even get me started on flying airplanes, cause my non flying brethern will swear that its not in God's plan for man to fly...yet, I've been flying small singe engine aircraft since 1997 and am still here to tell about it!!

Bottom line...if you like wearing helmets, then by all means, wear em! If you think you'll die if you don't wear one, I'm living proof that this is NOT true. But until you've caught up to and surpassed EVERYONE else in life's little game, keep your insutling opinions to yaself, you'll live longer and happier :)

P.S. its NOT ""through my 2 cent in...", its "THROW my 2 CENTS in..."

Pure entertainment - and that's about all it was. He didn't convince me. The trashed, Bell helmet that sits in our garage re-inforced my belief that a FF helmet is a good thing to wear when riding. DH is alive and well, after a 65mph get-off.

And after watching the video, what popped up next? The forum's own James Burleigh in San Fran, having 'Too Much Fun' on his commute. You go James. I was riding that with you. Your bike sounds just like mine, at 'sixty five' MPH. :) Loved the music too.

I didn't watch the next two videos that were offered though - one about Ass and another about oral sex. Geez - it's ten in the morning!!!

Last September I 'tested' the ATGATT thing...It works. Soft tissue damage and a couple of months of pain, then I was good to go again. Without the gear & ff helmet, I'm very certain the outcome would have been very serious, possibly fatal.

Bell too made an impression on me many years ago, in a bike shop I saw a Bell poster that was simply a picture of a helmet with the caption 'If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet'. I can't remember what shop, but I still remember the poster.

Its been law in the UK since the mid 70's. Anyone taking any notice of that garbage deserves what they get.
I have question for him....why do all motor sport participants use them?
Because they are all *******. :p It's too bad they didn't do 13-15 mph crash test with him and his "hog" vs. a brick wall. Maybe then you can put the "loud pipes save lives" mantra to the test too.

All "us" motor sports participants wear helmets because it's in the rules to do so....& that is because when the risks are calculated....the odds of survival are almost 0 when not wearing one.....where as with wearing a helmet the percentages go way up.....depend on what sport your in (bike or car racing are dependent on their venue....drag racing is different from road racing, like flat track is different the motocross with motorcycles....just a few examples).....preaching done.....have a nice day.... :D ....

As a person who has road raced several in the past at sanctioned events, I have had three crashes. All three were the results of someone else's mechanical failure that oiled the track.

The first was a high-side at mid corner at about 70 mph (on my Honda hawk - same one in the avatar) just as I picked up the throttle. Resulted in a broken collar bone because the helmet and shoulder hit the ground first, the collar bone gives and no other injuries.

The second was a 140 mph low side, that I tucked the front end on my Honda RS 250 grand prix bike just before the apex in someones oil. I slid a long ways (>500 feet) on my back, and got up with no injuries. The back of my helmet hit the ground several times during the get off and slide.

The third was a 90 mph high-side on corner exit on the RS 250. The corner workers said I flew about 20 feet in the air. I landed flat on my back, hit the back of my helmet hard and slid about 100 feet. The injuries were to my left foot from the force of being launched off the bike.

All three helmets were replaced as they were trash after each crash. They were nothing fancy, Arai Quantum.

I don't preach helmets. That is a personal decision. That being said, IMHO anyone that doesn't wear a full face Snell/DOT approved helmet is ripe for gene pool cleansing, hopefully the are registered organ donors. :rip_1:

I can attest the fact that the helmets I wore prevented very serious injuries and I am convinced I would have died in at least one of those crashes had I not been wearing the helmet. :D

Ah I remember us having this conversation before eh SC? You and anyone who rides without head protection (And I don't mean a thick skull) is a dumb selfish ignoramus who only gives a **** about themselves and no one else. Now that's how strongly I feel about it. No it doesn't mean other lifestyles like scuba (which I've done) and flying (which I've done, Helicopters, fixed wing etc) it's a matter of calculated risk and knowledge...and if you are not aware of the knowledge that if your unprotected thick head hits an object at moderate speed you will most likely die? are you getting the picture SC??? How in the hell can I tell you "your are a selfish prick" if that happens???

Ride with a helmet for your loved one's sakes please....any other excuse is pure baffoonary....

I once told my mom that I loved doing crazy / dangerous things, as safely as possible. The difference between riding the bike, and say free climbing (rock climbing without a rope), or cave diving, or several of the other things I have loved to do, is that it's not just me, it's all the other people on the road. If I missed a move free climbing, it was 100% me. There was no one else involved, my fault - my death. On the bike there are all the idiots. The road is NOT an area where I only have to worry about me.

You're not lucky, you're in the odds. The flying thing was a bit of a stretch. I've been doing it since '78 and I don't think that any of my friends are surprised I'm still here? 2,644 hrs and counting. Try not putting on your seatbelt during your next check ride and see how much flying you do afterwards. Is that an invasion of ones freedom. No. Your freedom to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose. You not wearing a seatbelt as PIC could interfere with someone's life if you encounter severe CAT at takeoff/landing. We wear seatbelts and helmets not to prevent accidents but to survive them with some reasonable chance of not taxing your friends & family's emotions or the medivac resources of the local ER. The idea is to keep small accidents as learning experiences and not family get togethers. If you could isolate yourself in your riding where no would be inconvenienced, I would agree with your choice, for you. Just don't have your situation near me so I don't have to be (because of my great benevolence) the one to dig you a hole. That would just piss me off.
