....but, I got an Air Conditioned garage with a fridge full of beer and a snow cone machine in it, so why not give it a whirl.......
If anyone lives in Dallas, you're always welcome to drop in....assuming you ain't that kid mechancic at the YAMA dealership that is!!!

Well, sheee-ut!

You need to host an FJR TechSouth!

We will get you learned up on the FJR. It would be an invaluable experience for all involved.

Serious.

Word.

UPDATE,

I've order the Snap On hex key set GunMD suggested cause I recognized that was the exact same tools the kid in the service dept was using as I ask him. He said SNAPON!!! THE BEST!!! Always thought you had to be a professional wrench to buy those.....

I've order a SERVICE MANUEL although the kid at the parts counter didn't think Yamaha had one out yet for the 06AE....I told him to it order anyway, Then I be first in line to get it..

I talked to the fastenal dealer in dallas,,,,,the sell Craftsman Professional tools which Joshua, who I talked to told me you can't buy at sears anymore......I then ask him to give me a price a set of 310 something piece set of Craftsman PROFESSIONAL TOOLS I was looking at on www.sear.com......Sears price as 650.00, fasenal was $690.....so they're close. What surprised me was, those giant red toolboxes on casters go for only around $800....man, those are too kewl!!!! As usual, I always go overboard when I buy stuff, but then again, I wouldn't have an 06 FJRAE sitting in my garage if I didn't have that personality flaw...So, it can't be that bad of a habit...

flaw?

What flaw?

OBTW, there are MUCH better ways to get OEM Yamaha stough than the Dallass dealers.

I've always been of the mind set that I can't justify the added expense for MOST Snap On items, but there certainly are exceptions. Ironically, the very reason I purchased that set of hex keys is because I used that same set one day at Desert Cycle Works in 29 Palms, CA while removing the plastics...I knew after using those I could never go back to the stupid little 3 inch long "L" shaped ones that come in a pouch from Craftsman.

:p

Since you are a beginner you can not get by without a half in drive torque wrench. I use a very old inexpensive Craftsman beam type wrench but I don't know if they even sell them anymore.

Bought a craftsman beam type torque wrench a month or two ago. Directions were clear. Buy the ratcheting type if you can afford it.

I bought Craftsman T-handled metric hex key set a few years ago, and very happy with it.

I got mine right off the truck (I work at a facility that has over 100 heavy equipment mechanics, so the truck stops by every week) for $69. I don't know about discounts but if anyone knows a Snap On sales rep we might be able to hook something up. It's my understanding (subject to smack-down) that the truck sales guys have quite a bit of flexibility on pricing which allows them to give good deals to their frequent and high volume customers.

And I just realized that the guy who claims to have A/C, a ton of beer, and a freakin' sno-cone machine in his effin' garage doesn't have his location listed in his profile! Coincidence? I think not.
Oh sure, go and update your profile and make me look like the dumbass. Nice.

I might have a slight advantage with my Fastenal guy when it comes to price. It might be helpful to know that these guys are like your local NAPA dealer. They have discounts for various accounts. The idea is to form a relationship with the Fastenal guy (or gal). Once you have the fair pricing part of the equation worked out, you repay them with loyalty.

I needed a T10 security Torx driver for the locks in my FJR trunk. I called SEARS and they would only sell me a set for twenty bucks. I called Fastenal, and by the next day they had the T10 security Torx in a 1/4" hex shank for $3. That reminds me, one tool everybody must own is a Snap-On ratcheting screw driver. It uses 1/4" hex shank bits and has a hollow handle to store a bunch of 'em. I love mine.

If you can think of a brand of tools, Fastenal can get it for you. Be persistent getting that pricing thing worked out. Set up an account if you have to and make sure it's at a substantial discount. Your Craftsman tools for example works out to 6%. Tell 'em you would like 15% discount, see where it goes. Ask, and expect something good will come out of it.

Sorry this post is so long, but consider the source. It is great that you appreciate quality. There are a lot of quality tools out there. S-K, Lisle, Proto, etc. Get to know the names. Mailing lists to be on: MSC, Travers, Fastenal, J & L, Mars etc.

You are going to have so much fun!

Hey, I went to a lot of trouble to update that......wouldn't want you to think if you were passin thru down here texas way, that I wouldn't have a snow cone (in any flavor) ready for ya....

Thanks for the recommendation of the snap on Hex tools....You got 2 snow cones awaiting anytime!!!

Best price for Snappy will be found at a Vo-Tech on Tool Day, where all the vendors (Snappy, Mac, etc) can be found, all with sometimes pretty decent deals in an attempt to start the new guys off in their direction. Once an initial sale is made, they will often never leave that manufacturer.

That is damn good advice!

I'm pretty sure Snap-on hex wrenches are made by Bondhus. I own both. Save the money, get the Bondhus.

Radman,

You have a hook-up at the local Vo-Tech or can just anyone attend a tool day?

Are you talking about the Rosemount Vo-Tech on 42 towards Hastings?

Maybe I could talk my Dad into stopping by for me to upgrade a few of my items.

Did a quick google search for an auto vo-tech out here and all I could find were bar tending and hair dresser academy type schools.
