In Colorado we have auto brokers. For me this has been an excellent way to purchase a vehicle. You find the truck you like, the broker gets it for you at a great price and they clean off all the add on stuff you don't want and there is no haggling to it. Some states like Texas don't allow brokers but here after a huge court battle there are plenty. I know dealers hate brokers because they are making less per unit sold but the volume can be huge!

When Pop bought his 2012 GMC 4WD he traded in his '99 GMC 4WD. That truck had 287K on it and still ran beautifully. The truck was not perfect but it still brought top dollar at trade in.
No vehicle with 287,000 miles brings in "top dollar" at trade in.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that no vehicle, period, brings top dollar at trade in.

I can personally disagree, but for a VERY rare case.

Bought a 1974 Honda Civic, 0 miles, brand new for $2700 (ah, the good old days).

Traded it in 1983 with 246,000 miles on it for a Chevy Blazer 4x4. Got $2750 for trade.

Drove the pee out of it for 10 years and made $50 on it!

That will NEVER happen again, I fear.

Yeah, I was being somewhat facetious ;) I know there are exceptions to every rule. But car dealerships don't stay in business selling low and buying high. It's pretty easy to convince someone they got a great deal by just manipulating the numbers. Like SoCal said, they may have a car on the lot that they're desperate to get rid of or, for some reason, they may really want the car you're trading in. But as a general rule, they need to turn a profit on every deal.

I was at the Kawasaki shop not long ago, and there was a young man there arguing with his wife over buying a new bike. His argument was "It's a great deal! They're giving me more for my bike than I own on it!"

Only saw one Toy reference here... While it's not a pickup... I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia, bought it off eBay about this time of year in 2008 from NJ for 10K, book was 15k. It had 88,000 on it. I stole it. The Toy fullsize of the same vintage is similar in many ways (except for leaf springs in the rear where mine has coils)

It now has over 135,000 on it... i have done nothing but regular maintenance to it, and the brakes once when i got it, then rears a month ago (just pads)

I did the timing belt, tensioner and WP, at 90k (I am assuming the dealer scared the guy i bought it from... thats why the deal?) as regular maintenance. When i did this.. i checked valve clearances. there was one valve that was .001 off the center of the specs(fine).. the other 31 were dead center.. perfect.

I literally drive it and change the oil once in a while... it has been truly amazing. No interior problems.. nothing (and it has a LOT of **** that could break...it just doesnt)

Oh...add a tailgate handle i replaced...

My neighbor who has a 2001 fullsize Toy Pickup, just had his frame replaced, by toyota, for free, with 125,000 on it. Toyota charged him nothing... he bought it used... they took care of it. Now.. I dont think the frame should have rotted... but they do around here..Ford and Chevy too... But I havent heard of them replacing any for free... my frame looks fine (maybe the NJ / NY difference in road treatments?)

I got a recall notice in the mail... offering to replace my frame at no charge, or refinish the frame with some kind of rust inhibitive coating if it has no perforations.(it is fine...) Pretty decent of them...

They hold thier values well, Toy might be worth a look.

If it must be domestic... and if we are voting... Ford.. hands down. (I own a Ranger with 267,000 miles on it.. it is driven daily by a 17 year old girl and is great) I have had lots of Fords.. been great.. I grew up a Bowtie fan... and was one, until I started buying new ones... Loved my Impala... it was a piece of ****, Hated my wifes Equinox...very nice utility features, comfy, fun to drive in nice weather...but the 4X sucked(I'd call it dangerous), and it had a lot of electrical issues. And.. the dealer SUCKED.. that didnt help.

You can do the same thing online with a dealer and you don't have to pay the broker, and you don't have to haggle.

Every dealer has a online or fleet guy.

My wife bought her first truck this way. She found out the cost (easy to do online) and made them an offer online.....they agreed on the price and she went down and signed the papers. (she HATES to haggle at a dealer)
