Star cruiser: what happens when you get in a wreck and you are not insured for your bike to be replaced? You will still make payment and have nothing to ride. You better hope the other guy is at fault
You neeed some serious insrance education to help you make a better decision.........
Starcruiser,The one coverage you should want MOST is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage-the one that protects you. If you've never heard of a motorcyclist rider being severely hurt by an auto driver, you must be the only guy in the whole USA. Due to being so vulnerable to injury on a motorcycle we should all purchase as much coverage as possible in this area. If you think no one ever collects coverage on their UM you are dead wrong. It happens every day. I personlly carry $500,000/ $1,000,000 Um/UIM coverage. I know of at least 6 or 7 cases of riders in accidents and losing a leg. What do you think happens if the ***** that hits you has only $20,000 of liability coverage and you are missing a leg. I guarantee you that if you have UM/UIM your company is going to pay off big time. You don't always have to sue your company to collect on this coverage either. It's not to say most people don't get an attorney to handle their claim but that's not always necessary. I sell the coverage and had a client buy my brothers Harley. This guy insisted on not carrying any more than minimum coverage (20,000/40,000) and sure enough he gets rearended by a car. Been out of work since the accident (about 7 or 8 months) and his attorney is livid that he didn't have more UM/UIM coverage. He gave up thousands because it was going to cost him a few bucks premium.
I can't disagree with you if you don't want comp and collision and you can afford to lose the value of the bike. That's definitely an individual decision with a finite limit of loss. On the other hand, if you end up out of work for months and have some sort of permanent partial disability, your decision to not carry UM will look a little foolish.
By the way, if you finance the bike, your decision is already made by the finance company. You need the physical damage coverage-comp and collision. They want their investment protected if you crack up the bike. They don't care about your liability limits because that has nothing to do with the physical damage protection. You can drive around with $20,000 BI coverage if you want but you must have Comp and Collision.
Hope for your sake you go back and reprice the UM coverage and pick up as much as possible. This is a risky sport we enjoy and I'm not counting on the other guy haveing enough insurance in case he hurts me. Sounds crazy but we have to buy the protection to protect ourselves because the other guys are too cheap to carry adequaate liability limits.

By the way, here is link to a discussion I started on rates in the general forum. Probably should have started it here but I screwed up. Note that Progressive is taking some decent rate decreases but in many cases you have to make the correct inquiry. A number of riders have saved a few hundred dollars by checking on their rates with Progressive.

I pay $109/year.....what are you paying for all the crap?
see my quotes above. mine are for the mid cities and is full coverage. well worth the difference if facing significant damage to a $13k motorcycle.Earth calling Mars, Come in Mars......
The $109 was for LIABILITY ONLY!!!!! And I'm talking Dallas, Texas here...the 2nd highest city in Texas to insure a vehicle in!!!
Shane, What's ANPAC and their number please?I live in College Station Texas and I have all my insurance with ANPAC. On my 2006 FJR1300AE, I have full coverage with $250 deductibles, $5000 medical, and $250k/500k on everything else including UIM. The cost is $221 a year (this does include several discounts).
As far as NOT having UIM, you are braver than I am. If someone without insurance hits me, ....
Best Regards,
Shane
