Star cruiser: what happens when you get in a wreck and you are not insured for your bike to be replaced? You will still make payment and have nothing to ride. You better hope the other guy is at fault

You neeed some serious insrance education to help you make a better decision.........

I will answer several question here......

Groo

Harris Coutry (Houston) is the #1 highest rates county in Texas,,,and Texas has the highest insurance rates of just about any state...... Yes, they are ridiculously high....

Shane Stump

2. As far as not carrying UM.......just try to sue your own insurance Co....and that's what you have to do to collect UM.........Now, if it was priced right which is around $20/yr, I'd buy it anyway.........

Weekend Rider

There is no such thing as replacement cost on a auto policy in Texas anyway....every policy gives the insurer the right to replace with like parts or they’ll pay you ACV for the value of the damaged parts in case you don’t want the bike repaired. And in case the bike is totaled, which they will do if the damage exceeds 40-50% of the bike's ACV value, all you get is what the bike would sell for on Ebay (if you're lucky). Like I said, to become financially independent YOU MUST stop sending all you money to Insurance Co's and take a few chances economically in your favor... Otherwise,,,,send me all your money and I'll guarantee you NO ONE WILL EVER BE ABLE TO TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU!!!!……Email me and I’ll give you my address you can send it all to…

Have a nice day...

Starcruiser,

The one coverage you should want MOST is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage-the one that protects you. If you've never heard of a motorcyclist rider being severely hurt by an auto driver, you must be the only guy in the whole USA. Due to being so vulnerable to injury on a motorcycle we should all purchase as much coverage as possible in this area. If you think no one ever collects coverage on their UM you are dead wrong. It happens every day. I personlly carry $500,000/ $1,000,000 Um/UIM coverage. I know of at least 6 or 7 cases of riders in accidents and losing a leg. What do you think happens if the ***** that hits you has only $20,000 of liability coverage and you are missing a leg. I guarantee you that if you have UM/UIM your company is going to pay off big time. You don't always have to sue your company to collect on this coverage either. It's not to say most people don't get an attorney to handle their claim but that's not always necessary. I sell the coverage and had a client buy my brothers Harley. This guy insisted on not carrying any more than minimum coverage (20,000/40,000) and sure enough he gets rearended by a car. Been out of work since the accident (about 7 or 8 months) and his attorney is livid that he didn't have more UM/UIM coverage. He gave up thousands because it was going to cost him a few bucks premium.

I can't disagree with you if you don't want comp and collision and you can afford to lose the value of the bike. That's definitely an individual decision with a finite limit of loss. On the other hand, if you end up out of work for months and have some sort of permanent partial disability, your decision to not carry UM will look a little foolish.

By the way, if you finance the bike, your decision is already made by the finance company. You need the physical damage coverage-comp and collision. They want their investment protected if you crack up the bike. They don't care about your liability limits because that has nothing to do with the physical damage protection. You can drive around with $20,000 BI coverage if you want but you must have Comp and Collision.

Hope for your sake you go back and reprice the UM coverage and pick up as much as possible. This is a risky sport we enjoy and I'm not counting on the other guy haveing enough insurance in case he hurts me. Sounds crazy but we have to buy the protection to protect ourselves because the other guys are too cheap to carry adequaate liability limits.

By the way, here is link to a discussion I started on rates in the general forum. Probably should have started it here but I screwed up. Note that Progressive is taking some decent rate decreases but in many cases you have to make the correct inquiry. A number of riders have saved a few hundred dollars by checking on their rates with Progressive.

I pay $109/year.....what are you paying for all the crap?

Starcruiser,

"All that crap" which includes $250,000per person $500,000 per occurence for Bodily Injury Liability-cost is $61, $100,000 Property damage liability- cost is$15, $500,000 per person and $1,000,000 per occurence for Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist coverage- cost is $91, $100 deductible for Comp- cost is $36, $100 deductible for Collision-cost is $247. Total cost for 2006 Fjr is $450 annual. That includes Guest Passenger and we write only 12 month coverage policies in CT with Progressive.

I might note that I also have a 1999 Yamaha Vstar, same coverage and cost is $162. Third bike is a 2005 KLR, cost is $156 again same coverage as above.

If you follow the link to the prior discussion, you will see that there have been some problems with Progressive getting the correct rate.

I still think that $450 for all the above coverage (especially the UM/UIM portion is a steal). I can't afford to remove the Collision coverage on a new bike and I have a loan on it so I am required to carry the coverage anyway, but as you see, the Collision is the most expensive portion of the entire premium.

I realize I may biased in favor of insurance because I sell it. On the other hand I'm also a realist and like everyone else, I've heard of dozens of cases of bikers being injured but not at fault in an accident.

Just wanted to see you protect yourself.

Ok, numbnuts, I'll repeat myself for you as I realize insurance salesman are a little slow.....

I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE WHO CAN OBTAIN IT FOR $400 FREAKING DOLLARS A YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10-4 my boy ?

But there are those out there who are underage, have adverse credit scores or live in high rated territories who are paying $$800, $900 or even $1,000 ++++++......

Now go sell some policies.....I buy my from PROGRESSIVE DIRECT not only because it's cheaper, but I don't care to support some halfwit insurance agent to sit around playing in the internet chat rooms harassing people all day long.. And don't give me that YOU DON'T SAVE ANY MONEY GOING DIRECT...If Progressive told you that, don't believe it...THAT'S BS Progressive lays on the independent agents so keep em sedated....

Hey, is it true you can get an insurance license with a picture and $10 in your state with NO TEST?

Hey Starcruiser,

Boy did you get up on the wrong side of the bed or are you just drunk! If you remember, you asked me how much I'm paying "for all that crap". I simply gave you the breakdown. I'm sitting here trying to inform you of gross errors and you take it personal. Guys like you should stay off the forum.

By the way, you are wrong again about Progressive Direct. Exact same rate through independent agents. Obviously you need the guidance of an agent. I really don't care about you, I give up trying to help you but possibly others out there might pick up some information and if you bother to look at the thread I posted you will see a number of others did indeed save some money by reading the information I posted. You should stick to talking about your whatever you do know. You certainly don't jack about the theory or reality of insurance.

This is my last response to you because you don't warrent any further feedback. You are a lost cause.

Good luck and for your sake I hope you never do have a not at fault accident while on your bike because you will be in deep do do.

PS: No photo on my insurance license

I live in S. Cal - paying Progressive about $750 yr. for all 3 bikes - full coverage on the FJR and Harley and laibility on the BMW.

Earth calling Mars, Come in Mars......
The $109 was for LIABILITY ONLY!!!!! And I'm talking Dallas, Texas here...the 2nd highest city in Texas to insure a vehicle in!!!
see my quotes above. mine are for the mid cities and is full coverage. well worth the difference if facing significant damage to a $13k motorcycle.

Insurance is a waste of money. . no doubt. You can cut your pennies where ever you want to save on the policy.

BUT

Where I am thinking you are wasting you money is on the LoJack. "IF" your bike gets stolen before you can even notice and can call LoJack. Your bike has been picked up by a van and the LoJack is sitting on the floor of some wharehouse. The bike LoJacks (in my humble opinion) are not worth it.

I want the LoJack that has a motion sensor and will call you if your bike it moved. BUT they dont have that for bikes just yet.

Just my .02 on the matter. . so for now I am keeping full coverage and the rider for my farkles until the bike drops in value. Just because I dont feel like dishing over the $$ for another one. I like mine too much.

iiuc lojack only works in areas where the pd's are equiped with lojack trackers and happen to have a so-equipped squad car in your area (or able/willing to dispatch one when you call). listen to the way most pd's rant about home (monitored) security systems for homes. do you really think they're going to go out of their way to go looking for a lojack vehicle unless it just happens to pass a properly-equiped cruiser on its way to the chop shop?

I'm not gonna get involved in THAT debate, but I do gotta say I've never heard of a finace company that doesnt require full coverage for a loan over $1000. Anywho. I pay $107 a year full coverage for my Virago, I quoted an 06a and they wanted $2000. ouch! That was through progressive. (stupid dui, but thats another story. I dont recommend them, real expensive night, but there was no accident involved so I guess it didnt cost near as much as it could have). Hopefully I can find someone who wont rake me over the coals for that past mistake (not TOO bad anyway.)

I live in College Station Texas and I have all my insurance with ANPAC. On my 2006 FJR1300AE, I have full coverage with $250 deductibles, $5000 medical, and $250k/500k on everything else including UIM. The cost is $221 a year (this does include several discounts).
As far as NOT having UIM, you are braver than I am. If someone without insurance hits me, ....

Best Regards,

Shane
Shane, What's ANPAC and their number please?

Others, contact numbers for American/Motorcycle Services LLC, Dairyland, and Foremost? Thanks.

My GMAC insurance just went from $360 to $534! And that's with a clean driving record.

My nephew is i the Insurance business - no - I will not buy from him, his company is too high!

But - we all know that accident history and moving violation citations all play into the price of a policy. He says that even your credit scoring can affect the price of a policy as well... SHEESH... :dribble:

Any way - Progressive for $355 / year (full coverage) in Illinois - for what it's worth.
