How much mileage left in this tire?

I was all set to put a new rear tire on yesterday. Showed up at the dealer that said they had a Michelin Pilot Road, and found a Pilot Power waiting for me. I have a 1500/2000 mile trip planned starting Monday. Can anyone guess how many miles are left in this? It's a Road 2CT.

Yamfitter would tell ya you have 3K left in it.. :lol:

I'd shoot for 1200 to 1500, but that would only be one up and riding conservatively

  • What was the beginning tread measurement?
  • What is the tread measurement now?
  • How many miles are on this tire?


That will tell you the average rate of wear.

Using that average rate...

...combined with the amount of tread left to the minimum recommended tread depth...

you ought to be able to estimate roughly how many miles you can go.

Throw in a safety factor to allow for variances in ambient temperature and road surface variations.

Would you really base your decision on a yeah or nay from strangers on this board? YOU are the one left stranded, not us, if we "guess" wrong. ;)

But that being said, in the second picture, you haven't even nicked the wear-bar yet....I'd take it on a 2k mile trip without blinking.

Sounds like you don't know how much tread you started with?

I'm not sure what consensus you're talking about...Howie drives with a car tire and gets 70 gazillion miles per tire, and Ray says two burnouts and a trip to the bar.

I personally think you "should" be fine, but I really don't know enough to be able to say. I don't know how you ride, what kinds of roads you'll be on, and what ambient temps you'll be riding in...

Why did you think you needed new tires anyway? Maybe you should trust your own gut, and get it changed. Use the rest of the takeoff tire after you get back??

I posted to ask opinion, not have a final verdict. My response above was tongue-in-cheek, something hard to get across on the internet.

I'll watch the tire close, just like I always do, and always do with every part of my bike. If it gets to be a problem I'll pick one up along the way. :assassin:

 
Me personally? I could get at least 5,000 miles more out of that tire. Perhaps as much as 7 or 8k. Seriously. My last set of PR2s I rode at least 3,000 miles after hitting the wear bars. (Which mi blind as a bat ******* step-pappy can't find - WTF?)

But that's me. I got 18k out of the rear. How many miles do you have on it so far? How loaded will you be? How will you be riding? Over what type of road surfaces?

I say 80% of the folks around here could easily get another 2000 miles out of that tire. You may be a little bit past the wear bars, but not an issue.

The type of riding I do varies so much it's kind of pointless to log the miles. Touring, twisties, commuting in D.C. traffic, and the occasional burnout are all on the current tire. I'm also the type of person that changes tires before they are completely cooked. Once the rear starts to break away under power, in a corner, I'll change it. Regardless of tread. I know this tire had some life left in it, but I was going to change it anyway.

What are most of you guys running for tires now? I've been through Bridgestones, Avons, and Michelins. I'll never buy another Avon...

 
The new PR2 I recently mounted on my bike came with 7/32" of tread in the rear tire. The inside edge of the lettering on a quarter is about 3/32", which is what it appears from your picture you have left. The PR2 I removed had just hit zero tread depth at a little over 9500 miles. If this was my rear tire I would be able to get 3 / 7 * 9500 = 4,070 miles out of that tire. So I would have no hesitation to take it on a 2k mile trip.

But, I would have already clocked off ~ 5400 miles to get to that point of wear. If you have only ridden 2700 miles to get there then your remaining miles should be half of mine. Which was why Wheaton asked the questions he did. If you never track your mileage you'll never know what you have left.

PS - the last two guys weren't kidding. They really do run those tires on their bikes. I (obviously) am running Michelin PR2's.

Do Whaaaaat?......Subtract what from what? Hold on just a minute....let me get my calculator out here!

Oh forget it...just ride the dang thang. Whats the worst that could happen? You may have to stop and buy a tire...heck I had to do that two weeks ago in Harrison AR.

Yeah, sure, you could always just wing it. So long as you don't have any time limitations or places you need to be.

But good luck finding a bike shop open on Sundays, or (in a lot of places) Mondays. Sitting around in BFE waiting 3 days to pay too much for a tire model I don't really want isn't my cup of tea. I'd rather be out wearing those tires down... ;)
