I hate to burst your bubble, but I just heard from a "pest control" guy that wood chips like that attract cockroaches by the brazillions! Have fun with that! :yahoo:

Up here it's ants that nest/thrive in it.

I had a g/f who had the front of her house landscaped with rhodo's and wood chips. The ants had nests in the chips, but came up under the siding on the front of her house, around the window rough openings and into her living room. When they pulled back her living room carpet, there was a sea of writhing black ants the width of her living room, inward about 5 ft deep from the window, and still advancing.

I think it's ok if you don't have it up against a structure, but ya want to watch it for pests, thats for sure.

Not here in the High Desert of the Columbia Basin...... we don't have cockroaches up here. Or at least, I haven't seen one in the 15 years that I have lived here.

We do, however, have plenty of scorpions, Black Widow spiders, various desert beetles, and our share of various snakes, both poisonous and non-poisonous. We also have a particularly viscous strain of red ants. But no cockroaches. ;)
