Taking some vacation time this week, trying to trim down the honey do list, by Wednesday I'd put a good sized dent in it so I though I'd take a day off and go for a ride.
I live in the flat lands of Illinois where all the roads are layed out in grids, if you want to ride the twisties or sweepers you got to travel, Your choices are SW Wisconsin or SE,SW Missouri, both are great choices, and both are a two-three hour ride just to get there.
I havn't been to Missouri in awhile and MO79 south out of Hannibal is always a good ride, lots of twisties and sweepers, the road has always been well maintained, and if you get it on a weekday not a lot of traffic.
I bailed out of the house at 5AM with every intention of riding to Hannibal, riding 79 down to Hardin, catching the ferry across the river, and taking the Illinois side back home.
I have a hard time stopping to take pictures but I got a few.
overlook MO 79
Ever thing was going according to plan until I got to Louisana,Mo. I stopped for gas, and got to talking with a couple from Indiana, they were taking the back roads home from a trip to Branston and where excited about the drive on Mo 19, so here's where the trouble starts, out come the maps, spread them out on the hood of his car(a very nicely restored MGA BTW). I see that if I make a short jaunt west on US54 it will lead me right into Mo19. I call home and tell them a will be a little later than planned.
19 beween Bowling Green and I70 turns out to be a hoot one big sweeper after another, South of I70 it gets even better more big sweepers, throw in some twisties, oh what fun!!
I arrived in Cuba, Mo. on I44 the plan was to cut it off, hit the interstate and slab it on home. Wellllll that didn't quite work out.
I was sipping on my ice tea, talking to the manager of the conveniance store, doing the where you from where you going thing, and he tells me if I stop now I'll miss the best part, so true,so true, 19 South of I44 gets tighter, twistier, lots of elavation changes, I don't think I rode straight up the whole way to Eminence. Lean, lean, lean, left or right, sometimes both at once, totally great road.
Once in Eminence it's time to check in at home, and let them know I'll be in a little later(well a lot later) than I thought(I'm in trouble now). Guess i had better grab a quick bite to console myself.
Cowboy Deans BBQ
Should have taken some shots of the inside, the floor covering is the same white rock as the parking lot, seating you have your choice of horsie saddles or tree stumps, drinks are served in mason jars, and the best damn BBQ I've had in ages.
Time to go home and face the music.
there is and unwritten law some where that you can't return by the same route that took you there, out come the maps and I see that if I take 106 East it's a short jaunt to 21 North. Good call 106 is tight and twistie, loads of fun. 21 North is more relaxed, lots of big sweepers light traffic, pile on the miles without being boring.
Pause on 21 to restore cirulation.
I did not want to hassle with the traffic by running through St. Louis, so I picked up 47 North to US61, 47 is kind of straight and flat through the Missouri River basin, but don't go to sleep, once it climbs out into the hills it a real treat, just deelightful, and my last bit of fun road. once I turned onto US61 just pinch in the cruise and head for the barn.
Rolled in a 11PM, exhausted, YES, in trouble, AGAIN, grin so big it makes your face hurt,ABSOLUTELY
