My fuel mileage used to range in the 42-43 average. Most of my riding is 2 up (80%). Last few tanks have averaged 46-47 with the last one (just filled up tonight) giving 47.7 mpg. It hasn't had plugs or air filter in 6000 mi. I'm not complaining, just wondering! Motor's probably going to go south now! They always run the best before they blow! lol

I've always wondered about that saying. Do they really run the best before they blow up? Or does a running engine just seem so superior to one that doesn't run at all by comparison?

Sort of like you always find what you are looking for in the last place you look?

As far as the gas mileage goes, who knows, consider yourself fortunate with todays pricing.

I travelled to the SFO rally last week, and found that I get much better fuel economy when I travel alone. In a group on the open road, if following other bikes, you are constantly accelerating/decelerating to keep a proper spacing. This dropped my mileage compared to running alone at more constant speeds. Also, wind speed and direction are a definite factor. Back home, I tend to run fast on the 4-lane to work. I will get 36-40 mpg at 80-90 mph, but can pull 49-50 mpg when cruising at 65-70 mph.
