I thought that title might get some attention. Okay. It's not what you think. I had a close call with two forest rats this morning:

I was on the entrance road to the power plant I work at this morning. there is a long straight stretch that comes in by the cooling tower. I regularly like to "open it up" along this stretch and this morning was not completely different. the slight difference was that I didn't break the century mark. Right about the time I let off the throttle two deer came over the berm to the right of the road at a full gallop right into the road in front of me. I immediately braked as hard as I could. I knew that I would not stop by the time I over took them and knew I didn't want to have the front end compressed in a collision, so I let off the brake. I had drifted into the left lane and was aiming for the hind quarter of the lead deer. I immediately got into the throttle hard and cut in between them. The second deer ran into my right hard bag. I heard the impact more than I felt it. Here was the result:

this bike saved my ass two ways. first, being able to brake as hard as I did without locking anything up and second, having all that awesome power at my disposal instantly. I love my bike even more now!

:yahoo:

Are you going to leave those lovely hairs on until Saturday?

Seriously, this could've been very, very bad. Glad that you came away from it to ride Saturday.... & beyond

Well, I guess my powers of observatione were clouded by adrenaline or something as one of my techs just told me that there was another spot with more hair on it! the top case!

The damn thing must have tried to jump over me! Only thing I can figure now.

Yes, Heidi I will leave the hair on there. Maybe it will fend off future collisions!

I've read a number of times that if a collision with a forest rat is unavoidable. Aim for the ass end. Their prey animals and if something is sneaking (or wailing) up behind them, their instinct is to haul ass. Sounds like it worked for you in this case.

I wouldn't want to try it with a swamp donkey though. Those things are are just as likely to put their head down and show you nothing but rack.

So that's what a hair bag looks like! Always wondered.... glad you made it out with nothing but a good story to tell.

Glad to hear that you escaped without crashing. Whew! Those critters seem to be coming out on the road in the daylight more often these days.

Man... You one lucky sumbitch!!

I like your plan to aim for the hind quarter of the rat, but if you actually have the time to aim, why not aim at the trailing one?

I'd hate to think what would have happened if the one in the back sped up.

In my case I didn't have time to do anything except **** my pants, and that wasn't very evasive. ;)

I was trying to avoid the second one! By the time I let off the brakes I was almost beside the second one. That was when I hit the throttle and shot in front of it. I would love to have that maneuver recorded, so I could evaluate what i did and see what the rat actualy did.
