To paraphrase Chuck Yeager "There are old riders and there are bold riders, but there are no old bold riders....." Something to think about. The Brit's sum it up pretty well "Ride like a knob and you'll die" <_<

Besides, at warp 6 ya miss all the perty scenary! :yahoo:

Hey, Guys!

Been a long time....

Yeah as I get older (53) I realize that Wisdom is when you show good judgment.

Good judgment comes from experience.

And...Experience comes from bad judgment...

(that you survived)

Went to a funeral today for a co-worker's husband who didn't get up Monday morning--dying in the night. Guy was 56 and a dedicated Tri-Athlete and Iron-Man competitor. Who would have thunk it? You never know....Dying can happen at any time, like it did to John. Dying stupid is in your control.

I am 71 and ride my AE for fun. If I am relatively alone and the road is in good shape, then I might play the gears and throttle. If I am in traffic, I am all about 180 degree vision and lots of reaction time. If I am in traffic and I don't what the road will be like, I throttle down, gear down, and let them pass me while I watch everything like a hawk. If I am tired, I go home. If it is pleasant and I have no agenda, then I drop the throttle down, pick a gear where I like the engine sound and feel, and let that high torque engine take me along at whatever speed it wants to.

When I get cancer and have only months to live, then all of the above is off the deck. Who cares then?

like what you had to say above!! I am near 68 and totally understand your attitude. I feel today I am doing well because I have had a continuous love affair with riding since 1955. I too handle my 06 AE gently until the road conditions allow pushing it hard but safely. I accept that my reflexes are slower today but keep in my attitude-Don't do it if it don't look right. Living one day at a time is a great feeling. Wonderful to be enjoying a happy retirement these past 7 years. I would recommend you to take up track riding id you never have done it. go to a reputable track school, get certified and enjoy a really thrilling riding experience. I have an 05 YZF-R1 setup only for the track and it has sharpened up my riding experiences. :yahoo:

That gives us 68 year old whippersnappers something to look forward to.

Well the recent postings from out...ahem...more mature riders makes me feel better and gives me something to aspire to. Hopefully I'll be riding for a long time still.

All I can do is agree with a lot of the post, it's just smart not to push if you don't feel it. I have to omit that lately I have been pushing real hard with my friends trying to stay with the kids ZR-1 and CBR-XX. Seems like all I was doing was triple digits lately but then after a performance coaching from my wife  (we blew by her on a secondary road one day) I decided to quit trying to keep up with the kids and just enjoy the ride.

My last three rides I never hit triple digits once and I have to omit they have been the funnest in a long time. After some of the high speed rides, I was exhausted from the metal strain. I'm finding now that I can have just as much fun in the twisties practicing my form. The people I ride with are also cool and don't really care what anyone rides or how fast you go, If someone doesn't feel it that's ok everyone knows where we are planning to stop.

I'm not a stop and smell the roses or picture taker, I like to get on the bike and go and I plan to doing it for a while. Everyday is different so ride to match your mood and have fun.

Just my 2 cents.

Dave

My last day out in the fall was like this. Curvy back road, cousin on his ZX11 following me and I'm just lazily going just below the speed limit around 40.

One straight 1/4 mile on this road, poped it to 110 mph for a very short period, than back below the speed limit, than the corner, than the cops.

Waved as I drove by and thought, gee sometimes I'm happy to just take my time.

GGPA & Yooper (& ??), you are the men!! I'm 62 and ride my '08 AE for fun too. But everyday feels like a slow day to me. Must be all the tumbles I took riding harescrambles & enduros back in the 70's & 80's. Things just don't heal like they used too, and being diabetic really slows things down.

All you young whippersnappers, take notice. The dumb stuff you get away with now will catch up to you.

"and being diabetic really slows things down"

I'm sure you are aware from your doctor that inactivity is lethal for diabetics. Going for a ride and then cleaning all the road dust off the bike is good therapy.

I'll never forget the lecture from my family doctor who prescribed more exercise. Before I could whine about not having enough time, he said, "And I don't want to hear anything about not having enough time. You have the time to spend. You can spend it going for a nice brisk walk everyday, or, you can spend it on your back in the hospital. Either way, the time will be spent. You get to decide how you want to spend it."

Hi Yooper, I will be in your neck of the woods 5/23-5/30 for my annual bass fishing trip to Crystal Falls/Fortune Lake. If you want to visit, try the 2nd cabin at 2 House Keys resort. We are usually 'at home' around 2 pm, I'm also a red head and don't fish during the bright sun times. Have had skin cancer 3 or 4 times now, the 'good' kind thank goodness.

Your advise is well taken, but I said 'will slow THINGS down', not slow me down. I just got back from my 3X/week gym visit. I've been doing that since '89 !! You know the 9/11 thing and trying to fly with all the diabetic supplies is a major hassle. Glad I'm sort-of retired and don't have to go thru all that crap.

It's experience, not an age thing. It's why noobs crash and the rest of us don't. Well....expect Skooter.....there's no explainin him!

But seriously, this has happened to me on occasion and I'm not over 40. It's just wisdom and experience so y'all can stop feelin so old now.

I'll put it on the calendar.

If you want to catch bass (largemouth & smallmouth), its not far from,

https://www.fs.fed.us/r9/ottawa/recreation/...ness/index.html

It is catch and release for all bass but they swim around like torpedoes. Morning and evening are the best time and the best lakes are Snapjack, Helen, and Crooked. No motors allowed except on Crooked Lake if you stay at Sylvania Wilderness Cabins. They were grandfathered in after the Forest Service bought the land up. Sylvania is also a nice place to go for a day trip also.

Well, not quite. You don't have to battle that testosterone thing and neither do most of us male creakers.

Well young lady, it's one thing to say 'you can stop feeling so old', but it's another thing when parts of your body keep reminding you that they don't appreciate what you have done to them over the years. Like the left arm that is numb most of the time, especailly at night when you lay your head left instead of right on the pillow and the C4-C7 vertebraes pinch the shoulder nerve. Or being diabetic, and urinating every hour during wake time, and every 2 hrs at night. Or that tree root that grabbed my left foot & twisted my knee the wrong way back in 1973 - ouch!! I still remember the day, it was Easter and I was miles from a doctor or hospital in the upper part of lower MI. And on & on & on...

Recall your mother yelling at you for cracking your knuckles?? Wisdom!! Have a safe future 'cause your past will kill you.

Yooper, I have been trying to get to Sylvania since 1967, just can't find the time. Got a 14 ft fishing kayak itching to go, I don't care about catch & release. Been to Crystal Falls the last 4 years in a row.
