I want my own website -

something more than WordPress, not as much as a full blown Invision board..

I've been looking at iPage, it seems kind of cool - but the templates available look pretty, uhh, lame.

So what about DreamWeaver? Seems cool one can build local then FTP to the host site.

Any suggestions from the techno-web-geeks?

This is a new arena for me and I welcome all suggestions.

Some of my requirements are:

1. Public facing site for the CBA - meaning some discussion board is needed

2. Imap email with forwarding

3. Secured private area for my family to post

4. A place to share my rides and motobike experience - with minimal comments - more just a place for me to look back when I'm all phooked up and can't ride no more.

5. I like the idea of being able to have the site maintained local - so if the host company fails open I still have all my memories.

Open for all ideas!

Thanks in Advance,

dcarver

I have a website, hosting through Godaddy and I use Serif Web Plus to build the site. No need to know html, easy program to learn. I haven't kept the site up to date, been busy hopefully I can find time to work on it this winter. I also have a forum through a free site which seems to work okay. Not enough members to really know if there are any bugs. The link to the forum is on my home page - https://motorcycleden.com/

Actually Simon, for just once, our Bustanut joker is right. Carver has been sending photos of his "chorizo" from his cell phone to Jenn Sterger, Brett Favre, RadioHowie, Julian Assange, barb, Old Michael and Papa Chuy for quite some time now. Jenn did say that she needed a magnifiying glass and a hell of a lot of imagination though!

Take a look at Joomla. It's similar to WordPress (In that it runs on Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) but is more advanced. There is a ton of support out there on various forums and lots of free or really check skins, plug-ins and widgets.

Also most of the major hosting companies support it and in some cases you can install Joomla with one click.

My $02...

+1 on Joomla. Used as a retail site tho, but easy to acquire and get going in a hurry

Thanks everyone. I decided on iPage and Drupal. Drupal over Joomla simply because that's what my work has recently decided to use. Kind of fun but frustrating too. I'm used to being the entire sys admin with total control, LOL.

Don -

This is exactly the kind of stuff that Timothy Leary used to profess. He thought he was 100 years ahead of his time. He 1st sought cryogenics to preserve his brain after his death, but he eventually gave up the idea of cryogenics and began to believe that he coud preserve his mind/thoughts for humanity digitally. He's dead now, and I guess we're all still waiting for the link?

Just sayin' :D

Yep, got the domain name, got the site up, now I just have to learn Drupal.

So much to learn about all this 'commercial website stuff'. Much different than at work where I'm the King.

For example -

1. Only 1 MB files allowed for upload (e.g. pix for ride reports) on Drupal - meaning you're still stuck with PhotoPhucket. :****: The idea was to save some bucks here.. PhotobucketPro, Vimeo, etc.

2. The 2 'free' 'build your sites' only allow 6 pages or so then you have to pay... way more than what it's worth - which then leads to the steep learning curve of Drupal or Joomla or the like.

3. Posting images to a board like this requires different coding - so to translate all my RR's from here to there will take some time unless I can find a translator of some kind.

Oh, ya'll will have to just guess at the url for now! :****:

This is kinda kewl stuff - it will be nice to know I have all my 5th decade riding safe and secure in private storage. I hate to imagine the fjrforum.com leaving us, but websites do all the time. And I have way to memories here to take that risk. When I'm really old and phooked up I want to see what I used to do!

One last note, after just barely scratching the surface, I have to give all the Admins/Moderators/Slappie all sorts of credit for keeping this board up and going, directed, and focused. I really can't imagine.

I've had people I know use GoDaddy and end up hosed when they tried to xfer to another service. It's as if GoDaddy holds their domain name hostage; preventing them from moving without lots of headaches.

I personally use 1&1 and have never had an outage. I've heard good things about Squarespace and the design/development tools they include with their accounts.
