So Don, did you go with CDGFU - Cripple Dicks and Gerbil Feckers United? Inquiring minds want to know! It is a catchy title, thanks to Brian and Bust!

I won't use that image for my new site, but I WILL have something very close to it...

Here's one potential candidate for the image that may best embody the sensibilities of the site...

I've used phpNuke, Drupal, Xoops, Joomla, and WordPress over the years. Drupal's a good choice as it's very versatile and can handle just about anything. The one drawback is that Drupal can be a pain to keep updated (in terms of the backend modules if you have a lot). Drupal 7 will likely help with that once it releases. IMHO, Wordpress is a very good alternative as well (using the version I host myself); it's slowly creeping up on the capabilities of Drupal and has the advantage of simple-to-do updates (one click really); I moved from Drupal to WP recently. We've got a lot of clients that run both and when they come to us for help, I kinda prefer WP for ease of use...easier to explain as well.

Still have a dinosaur phpNuke/Invision Board hybrid running a large gaming website also, but I wouldn't recommend that pain to anyone, lol. :D

Big John Cash never got as much with a snarl as I do with a smile!

I've had people I know use GoDaddy and end up hosed when they tried to xfer to another service. It's as if GoDaddy holds their domain name hostage; preventing them from moving without lots of headaches.

I personally use 1&1 and have never had an outage. I've heard good things about Squarespace and the design/development tools they include with their accounts.
Gunny.

They'll also hold any domain names you search for on their site so that if you decide to not buy the domain at that moment, it'll appear registered when you go back to register at a later date. They'll conveniently offer to let you pay them for the service of snatching it up as soon as it expires (on top of the domain registration fee).

For those that don't know/realize, it's also possible to have your domain name registered with a completely different registrar than where you host. Personally, I use NearlyFreeSpeech.NET for my domains, and HostGator to host the actual sites/data.

I want my own website -
~Get server space, it's cheap and pretty much all of them nowadays do unlimited space/bandwidth.

~Put *everything* you do on this server space as that way you have control. Even if it means starting out slow and posting very basic html or even .pdf files etc. Keep all of your photos etc here as well as 3rd party photo-hosting is gay.

The problem with going to some other folks that offer fancy web-site interfaces is that you have to conform to whatever their ****-of-the day entails and it typically moves faster than you'll want to .....so then you get frustrated and behind and you give up and then time goes by and they go broke or you don't pay your bill and you **** is gone forever.

Do **** that you can do on your own computer and share it with the world via the server space that you buy, that way you are just opening up what you have at home. KISS principal will make you more than a 18month wonderboy.

If you want to take it to the next step you can do **** like database driven applications, but if you go this route: --->Still do them on your own server space. Example: This is how you'd do WordPress and all those clones that run of of SQL and PHP.

I've got a couple of WP (Word Press) sites up (on my server space, not theirs) and you can do some pretty nifty **** with WP, and the open source means that many smart folks are doing awesome stuff that is available free, including grass-root support ....and the potential is really amazing.

****But, you have to keep up with it**** ......And it is not without frustration.

My latest frustration currently (with WP) is that every update of their's that I do (and you want to keep up with their updates) I lose tweaks that I previously made so I have to re-do the tweaks. (Sure there is a solution and it is to create child themes ....blah blah blah. It's all cool, but it's also a PIA and bottom line is you have to keep up with it all in addition to keeping up with posting all of your *** content to the world)

Good news is that all the content is in *my* databases on my server which I regularly back up, so at least I know I will at least have that on the day that it all blows up .. ...but still, come that day --->I'm in for a major PIA ....even though I have the data.

Also, I'm pretty much locked into to doing WordPress going forward or spend infinitive time and confusion converting.

In contrast: My moto bike stuff is very simple and very primitive, and I could have it up on any server in minutes if I wanted. It's just a matter of transfering static files.

If you want to poke around for potential ideas:

A temporary blog I did for the 10n10 here (maybe some ideas for you, did remote photo-upload, timed spotwalla maps to post up at specified date and times etc)

Here is Grace's blog --not as much bells and whistles (on purpose) and a pretty straight-forward but it gets the job done.

- meaning some discussion board is needed
Are folks going to be able to say "***" on that board?

WRT: Domain names.

Domain names are like women, the ones you like are already taken. But you can still get a good one from a strange country.

Nice website Don...hopefully I'll be able to provide a CBA ride report one of these days/months.

 Don, darling, are you calling me ? I have another pair: pink sparkly on black: "It's All About Me"

And 'no' I'm not posting a pic. But in the interest of helping a guy get his website going, I might consider a little sumthin' sumthim' in a PM ;)

ps - I hope MS dcarver knows I'm playin' with ya !! (no one does it better) :p

Some interesting advice hear.

FWIW to anyone else loooking...

I left GoDaddy for their stupid-*** policies. Very happy with 1and1 as my host provider! Although 1and1 offers some useful starter site templates, the limitations of the same have lead me to do FJRRally.com using PHP/mySQL. I do my editing in Dreamweaver.
