I'm not concerned about the engine or low oil level for 5 minutes. Believe me it's fine. I wouldn't even have attempted the trip back home if I were concerned about that. There are many drops of oil in 1 quart let alone 4 quarts. She's my baby and I would do anything to hurt her with the exception of dumping her on her side on asphalt.

I guess I should consider myself lucky that when the same happened to me, backing in a circle down my driveway, same slow-mo fall, I hadn't had it long enough to get anything bolted on that would damage it. By that I mean the night I brought it home.

Well, the drop sucks, but you're not the first one, nor will you be the last. Glad the damage was minimal, except for the cover. FWIW, I finally took my highway pegs off when they created a leak on my right side cover. When I pulled the bolts out, they were bent to ****. Those pegs are totally not worth it. After I took them off, I still ride long distances and am my comfort level doesn't suffer.

As far as the oil level light, I wouldn't worry. It's a level light, not a pressure light. That's a significant leak to lose that much oil in a relatively short time, but I would be very surprised if that light doesn't come on very early; sort of like the reserve warning. Lol.

If you have any concern at all, check the lobes next time you do a valve check. No scoring, and you're golden.

Confirmed by the forum: that light is indeed an oil level light, not an oil pressure light. This is HUGE good news. Looks like all my ranting was for naught. Very glad to be wrong about that. Sorta like I feel some days in my 7th grade remedial reading classroom.

A friend with a 1999 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 recently cooked his engine. Apparently this design has a plastic oil pump drive gear with a history of reliability issues. My friend was even aware of this. Yet when his oil light came on he continued to drive, believing it was an oil level light instead of oil pressure. Know your bike! "I'll get some oil at the next town." Right. Broken gear. Ten miles later, seized up tight. He got $1000 for the carcass. The only qualifier for this level of bone headedness...he's a musician.

If it makes you feel any better, I've had my low oil LEVEL light come on while riding downhill through some twisties while the oil was near (but not below) the low mark in the sight glass. I immediately stopped the engine and pulled over to check oil level and found it within tolerance. You're probably fine.

(my AE was pushed over by a drunk the 2nd year of ownership, $2K worth of tupperware and a new side case to boot).

On the repair if your new cover doesn't make it? Liquid Steel it.

Yamaha engines are renowned for being bullet proof. Shame the case covers are not as robust!

I think I'd prefer to have the covers be a little malleable. They are much easier to replace than a case.

My brother owns the local Yamaha shop...
I could have ordered the crankcase cover, etc. and installed it myself, but have too much going on at work this week to mess around with it.

Wow... local stealer has such a bad rep that even his own brother won't deal with him unless he's in a bind!

Glad the damage wasn't worse. Think about sliders or cages for next time.
