What made them decide your $10.2K purchase should be taxed at the higher value ? Seems the east coast is bucking for another tea party.
They have some screwy book that they refer to, which has no basis in reality.
Guess I'm just cheap, but knowing that the state was going to re-price my hard found bargain just to squeeze me a little harder for taxes would really cheese me off. Tax workers there hopefully don't sleep well at night.

I was burning with guilt here in the golden state since I've rolled up 500 mi in the last 4 days. I know it's no record, but since others here say their bikes are in hibernation, I was feeling your pain. Today I went to the DMV to get my title & plate, (The bike was from Nevada) and it cost me $740!!! :angry22: +two hrs of my valuable time. (And it's probably gonna cost me that much for a year of insurance too!)

So if you think it's all fun and roses here in the golden state; it's not. It's more like a rectal exam!

Oddly, this information doesn't make me feel any better at all.

BTW, registration is the least of it. With our over-diligent CHP on the job, for me, at least, it's the INSURANCE.

That's how Arnie's gonna balance the budget, just tax, and extort more money from us poor defenseless motorcycleists.

What I don't understand is how the cost of everything doubles every year, the services are cut in half every year, our wages are stagnant, and the frick'in state is still bankrupt?

Oh well, good thing we got some tasty roads to ride. (Until they take our licenses away)

If it's anything like here in NB (Canada?), if it was a private sale, DMV would use a blue red some colour book to determine FMV and levy tax accordingly. And try on a 13% sales tax for size.

And a $3900 tax bill on a $260K property

Holy crap! I just forked over 2675 property taxes on a 94k property. If I had a 260k property, I'd have paid over 7 grand...

So, what was the breakdown on that?

I recently registered an auto here in WI, and the total came up to 764...but a pretty good hunk of that was tax.
It was around $500 in taxes, and $240 in the 19 other fees. (My wife filed it away in her secret filing cabinet so I can't give accurate numbers.)

What makes no sense to me, is why they don't base the fees on vehicle weight? The heavier the vehicle, the more damage it does to the road. Have'in a 2 ton SUV that costs the same pay the same reg fee is pretzel logic. No wonder all our roads are trashed, and there's no money to fix 'em!
Of course I don't know about California, but in Wi you pay tax on the value, plate fees are based on the vehicle. For light trucks they have 3 different weight classes. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, tanks, mopeds all have different plate fees.
