Stick the key in the ignition and quite often I find that it takes many attempts trying to turn the key clockwise to get it into position to hit the starter. Then, on occasion when I push the starter button the engine doesn,t fire (no ignition) Any ideas whats happening ?

This may seem overly simple, but make sure the key isn't bent a little.

Gunny! I got so sick of my key bending and having difficulties like you describe that I went down to the locksmith and had a new key made with a much more sturdy key blank. (I would recommend a locksmith over a hardware store, etc)

Yepper, long key = gets bent easily. I'm worried one day the key will finally break. So I always have an extra with me.

I like phroenips suggestion of getting a better key blank.

I had same problem, yep bent key, gently flattened it by tapping with a hammer on flat steel surface. I couldn't see in fractures in the key's surface, but made it the spare key. I always carry the red key. BTW I think twisting was caused opening the bags.

1) Is there any problem using the red key as a regular key if the black key is f'd up away from home?

2) Re. locksmith making a key, is there not a chip in the black key to make it work?

Certainly is in the UK ones. Do you have a flashing red light when you turn off the ignition? If so, yes.

And I had to have my switch changed because it became increasingly difficult to get the key in properly, and the ECU ('cos they're tied) and the other locks (to keep "one key fits all").

We are advised never to use the red key except in emergency. Something to do with it being the master.

My key was very difficult to turn after inserting into the ignition until I discovered this secret.. Try this, After inserting the key push down on the key let it rebound then turn. This seems to create a release and allows turning of the key every time.

Also if the key is new with sharp cuts run it over a wire wheel to dull the cuts.

The original keys appear to be manufactured from wax, or some material of that consistency and strength. I went to a local shop and had 3 keys made, that are tough, and by the way, about 20% of the cost of a new, presumably soft key from the dealership. <_<

Pay no attention to the Canadian or the Brit. US bikes do not have chips or red keys, (the master key for the alarm).

Silly Canadian. We've told you this before. :D
