Yes to:

Contact cleaner, then...

Silicone lubricant (liberally applied will also remove contaminants)

Big NO to:

Graphite based (electrical shorting risk)

Teflon or PTFE based (will accumulate and gum up)

Petroleum lubricants (will accumulate contamination and gum up)

I've been experiencing something similar. Tried washing the tumblers with contact cleaner & then lubing with silicon spray but no noticeable improvement.

Tried it with the spare (unused) key, similar result.

The only thing that definitely works is pulling the key back towards me as I initiate rotation - works every time without any drag!..........

All I can imagine is something is worn in the lock itself.

I think it's possibly something like grit from the road salt they use during the winter, stops the tumblers from moving freely.
I tried the "pulling the key" (and pushing, easing it out a gnats ...), sometimes it went, sometimes it didn't.

I poured a lot of brake cleaner in, flooding through, played with the key, in, out, twisting, repeat. Eventually it cleared and would work consistently, albeit notchily. Let it dry out for a while, then lubricated with PTFE spray, though this is against advice given above.

In my case I'm not worrying overly, my wife is buying me a replacement as a birthday present :hyper: (that wasn't the case when I started this topic).

Yeah, I got me a trophy wife too. She said she'd love to get me a shiny new red 2014 FJR1300ES!!!

Only problem is that she has no income, so I'd have to figure out a way to pay for it!

Well Hell....let's hear it for MissusTrophy!!!
HUZZAH-HUZZAH-HUZZAH!!!
I still can't believe it myself. Waiting for delivery to the dealer from Yamaha Europe, maybe a week.

It's an AS (AE to you), but apparently with even faster and smoother gear-change than the Gen II, and of course the fancy suspension of the ES.

I might give a little write-up about it (if I can find the non-riding time).

We shall see.

... Just post when she gets pissed about something you did and...
She's been pissed with much that I've done or said for the last 44 years, 8 months, 28 days, 8 hours (approximately). I'm not convinced she's likely to jump ship now. But so long as I've got my new FJR ...

She may be mcatrophy's wife, she's no trophy wife (whatever that is). I've earned the money, but she tells me "What's yours is mine", and makes sure it's not wasted on unimportant things (to her). That way we she can save up enough for the occasional luxury, as well as as essentials (like FJRs). Hey, it's no use me trying to save money. When I bought the engagement ring, it literally emptied all my "savings", and it wasn't exactly expensive.

We're now living off my pension, so it's come out of our her savings.

And, the bike is shiny, but it isn't red (piccies when I can). Although, when I get it, it won't be shiny for long; it'll get rained on, driven along muddy lanes - so I'll be testing the traction control - and generally treated like all my bikes have been.

Hopefully, the ignition switch will remain functional

Only for the sake of clearing up ANY misconceptions, and assuming you "really" don't know what constitutes a "trophy wife" (plus it gives me a chance for a shameless picture placement) if you, me, or any guy on the board, was married to this, she would definitely be the consummate "trophy wife!"

My wife may not be quite so well endowed, but to me she is far more beautiful

Yeah, I know what a "trophy" wife is. Mine really isn't one. I just used the phrase because you had earlier.

Mine's far too easy to live with to qualify as one. ;)
