I looked at/played with this thing at Best Buy, and I can't get her, uh, it out of my head. Never owned anything but PC's, but geez, this thing is nice.

And that big-assed screen. And the whole Apple thing is so friendly and inviting. Should a brother not spend $1800 on a home computer? Will these things cost $39.95 in a couple of years.

That's 450 gallons of 87 octane. 18,000 miles worth of fuel. SIX sets of tires. TWELVE years of NAFO fees. 1818 years of Dr. Rich's advice. (I've taken to weighing everything in FJR-owner terms.)

But they are nice, I have had one since September and still dont know my way around it.

They also have this nice little plug in the back that allows you to run 2 screens....... and it is way better than Vista.

None of these things will get any cheaper, especially the iMac, GET IT !!!! :clapping: Nothing but apple products from now on, O.K.? :D

Of course it will sell for less as new technology replaces it, but if you wait for that to happen you will want the new technology, and then you'll have to wait for that price to drop, and so on. Then you'll never actually buy one. I guess that may not be a bad strategy if you don't really need it. ;) That's pretty much how I prevent myself from buying a sport bike. B)

long live the PC (with XP pro)

and btw i have spent at lest 2200 on my computer at home, and it plays/ programs no issues at all and very easy to keep it "up-to-date", mac are also VERY expensive to upgrade.

that reminds me, have to get some fresh coolant for it this summer (even my super computer needs some fluid changes). :p

Get it, you won't regret it... and pop for the upgrade like fjrchik said. Well worth it. I have a 20", shoulda bought the big one. :(

Oh, and get 4GB of RAM but 3rd party, not Apple's. Save you about $100.

Here's where I've bought my last couple of Macs clicky Factory referbs, all the latest software, free shipping and full warrenty. The models here a just a bit behind the curve as far as the latest and greatest hardware but if your not a big power user, I'm not, they're good deals.

Pffft. I'm sitting here with two Mac's running now. The oldest, is SIX years old. Cost of upgrades in that six years? NOTHING. And, it'll still smoke the **** out of the newer PC that is also on my desk. (Yes, there are three computers up and running on my desk.) (It's a big desk.)

So, let's save all the brand-bashing. Mac's are good computers. They are not the cheapest. They are very user-friendly and intuitive to use.

So, while that initial price tag may be higher than a PC, you will enjoy using the Mac and may very well get more years of "useful, productive life" out of it than you would a comparable PC.

This is just my opinion, of course. I know of no one personally that has purchased a Mac and regretted it.

every pc i had has lasted at least 5 years of "abnormal" abuse. I play higher tech games on my pc and program said games, so there is a need for MY upgrades. mac don't use the same code as PC. i tried to to use a icky mac for programming, i could not "hot key" as fast, also WTF is up with ONE mouse button?!? mine i has like 7, works really nice with auto cad too.

btw my computers never die from out being out of date, no no, they die a slow horrible death of heavy use. on a days i don't spend reading forum, my 4.0GHZ D core runs 80%-100% full power, heats up my room nicely in the winter

And there ya go. If you have a specific need for the PC, fine. It doesn't take anything away from the Mac. For the average "user" of a computer, the Mac is an excellent alternative. And I am of the opinion that many of the things the average user may want to do are just easier on a Mac. It is a good machine that will produce a lot of good results for those of us that aren't "programers" or really all that computer-savy. The Mac just works. It does what you want and does it easily and doesn't require that I have a Phd. in computer science in order to get the desired results. The Mac gives me what I ask with a "logic" that makes sense to a non-computer dude.

Oh, for what it's worth, I don't play games on computers, so that is not an issue I ever deal with.

I did the same thing on Monday night!

Went to Best Buy with the cousin and her family. I handled the kids while they looked at digital cameras. So I took them over to the Apple display because I was having a hard time justifying the 24" vs the 20" (even though I have to have the power of the 24"). Even the 20" seems like a big enough screen for my desk at home. Guess I'll have to get a bigger desk! Anyways, the kids had a blast playing with the Photo Booth program and taking pictures of themselves. You can just stand or sit in front of the computer and take your own picture with the built in camera. It was fun to check out all the different settings too, we turned Sadie into a cyclops!

Macs have their niche and Scab is right, they are awesome, but not for everyone. Gamers usually don't like them at all. But that niche is growing quickly. Its actually pretty ridiculous that I don't have a Mac at the moment, given the fact that I'm in Printing and Graphic Design, because the whole industry uses nothing but Macs. They are more common than most people realize. And once you learn your way around one, which will take a whole 5 minutes, that price tag won't matter much anymore.

I don't go in there very often, so I don't know if these "Apple Centers" at Best Buy are just a special promo, or test, or even new, but they are very inviting, and I was drawn to it immediately.

I'm not usually a sucker for displays or flash, but I was dazzled. Can't put my finger on it.

I was never even approached by a salesperson, and ended up "playing" with this iMac for 20 minutes.

I hadn't even come in for a computer dammit! And now I'm smitten.

Marketing *******s!

BTW, thanks for all of the opinions and advice.

I'll take a ride and think about it. :D
