Hey folks. Would appreciate some input. Have signed up at a couple of places that host photos so that I can link to an avatar and maybe post a few pics now and then. I don’t even have a digital camera yet. Anyway, I managed to scan a couple of old pics and upload them to one of the host sites. However, it was then I learned that I couldn’t use them as avatars and such because they were bmp files instead of jpg files. Next, I found out there is software that will convert my bmp files to jpg files. So I did a search and found a couple of converter programs. But I was hoping to get some ideas from some of you that may have experience in this area. As you can tell I’m new to posting pics and stuff like that on the net. But I’m trying to learn.

Now for my question: Could ya’ll give me some ideas on which of the image conversion softwares ya like best? My use would be limited to occasional, and cheap or free is not a dirty word in my book.

Thanks, :)

I use photoshop, but that will be a little above your level I think. I would recommend ACDsee. It's not just a conversion software, but also a really good image browser for windows. They have a freeware version that pops up a notice every 15 images or something...

Thanks slapnpop. Will look-up ACDsee right now.

Also, hope you had the opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful weather we had in TN today. :)

ACDsee does file conversions both individually and in batches as well as image resizing. The ACD package comes with a light duty image editor that does all basic functions. It works very, very well as an image viewer and slide show generator. I shoot ~7k to 10k worth of pictures each year and I use ACD as my front line viewer.

You can get near Photoshop capabilities with much more user friendly functions from Paint Shop Pro. PSP will let you do all common editing, file type conversions and resizing with great ease. If you want to do more PSP will almost match Photoshop for non-professionals.

Thanks ionbeam,

Have looked at a couple of Swares. Probably won’t convert many images. You know, would like to use a few of the “old” favorites now and again. Appreciate the input.

Unidream makes a program called Powerbatch that allows you to select multiple files (batch them) and resize, convert, and save them all. Best of all, it's free. Check out this link for this free, simple to use software.

WB4,

Thanks, :)

That is an excellent website. I came across CNET a couple of times years ago. But only for news purposes. Didn’t realize they had a section for downloads. Am going to check it out thoroughly.

Thanks again!

The current version of Windows Paint will save between BMP and JPG. That and resizing the image are about all you need.

---update---

AFAIK "Win98" (SE or otherwise) is not considered "current" as referenced above.

Bounce,

Thanks. That’s excellent news. :) Have 2 PCs. one with 98 and one with 98SE. I almost always use the older PC, which doesn’t have save to JPEG. But, you’re right on target, found the “save to JPEG format” on the 98SE PC. It’s also on my wife’s newer laptop (XP) with additional formats. Will give em' a try!

Thanks again. This may be all that I will need for my limited use.
