I have been lurking on this board for a couple of weeks and decided to join today. I am i the process of deciding which bike to buy (Concours, FJR, RT) and I have waffled so many times I am starting to lose cred with my riding buddies. Today, I am riding home a 2009 FJR a friend is lending me for the weekend. I am hoping to make my choice this weekend and pick up a bike on Monday.

So what's the question....

I have found a used 2006 farkled to death with all the recommended options and add ons. It has 20K+ miles and it is listed at $7900

I have also found a 2010 OTD for $13,600 (YES and Top Box) $14,5ish

Which would you take?

Thanks in advance for your replys

I know it doesn't answer your question, but there are brand new 08's and 09's around for good prices. With a new model coming soon, they will drop again.

An 06 w/20K is already 5 years back on the model year and with more miles than most (not the guys around here, but motorcycles in general).

I have seen 08's brand new for under 11K. One avail right now for 11,300. Oddly, AE's are cheaper around here than standard versions.

Oh, and I guess I would get the new one over the 2006. A few fixes there and better resale value should that ever be needed.

Hey Slowride....well I've had my farkled '06 FJR with 22K miles for about 2 months now and paid $7900. So far no complaints. Most fun I've had on a bike in a long time. I, too, was torn between a used and a new model. But it came down to what I could afford at the time.

My final .02 cents? $13 - $15K is still a lot of money compared to $7900. So what if it's 4 years old? If the '06 is in good shape, you can't go wrong.

Oh...and whatever your final choice is.....you damn well better post some pics of yer new beast. Them's the laws 'round here.

Not even going to tell you one is right over the other.

I guess the biggest factor is going to be How much will you end up spending on the new bike to get it farkled they

way you would like -vs- the cost of the 06 already decked out (If those farkles appeal to you).

Gen I, Gen II, New verse Used and well maintained. I think you will be happy regardless.

Whatever you buy should be able to get you 100K+ miles...if the mileage is low and the bike is in good condition, then get yerself the older bike (Gen 1 preferably) and save your money for trip$$$.

One of the reasons I am looking at the 10 vs the 06 is, I saw somewhere on here that they resplined the driveline to reduce the rpm's in 5th. Is this the case?

I had a 2008 GL1800 and I was ALWAYS looking for a 6th gear.

Some smart guy told me that in 08 and after 2nd gear was re-tooled, but that is all I have really heard. Might be something on the net about the small differences year to year.

I'm looking as well and will choose between a used 07 and a new 08. Like you, not sure which way I will go yet.

I'd purchase 2nd gen 2008 for like 8500-9500 with low miles...they are out there I know.

Fly to it and ride it home. :yahoo:

2008 onward has pretty much worked out all the little kinks there were

just my 2c

+ 1

I've an '04, with 53,000 miles.
I'd get the '06 that's been loved/farkled to death. That owner would have maintained it perfectly.
+ 1 again.

I would purchase the used bike with all the farkles. What's 20K miles on an FJR? It's nothing. Many of us easily do that in a year.

You are buying a practically new bike if you asked me.

As someone mentione before, the seller probably took excellent care of the bike if it was well farkled.
