Installing the Magnum Blaster Horns

I found the great instructions from fjrtech.com thank goodness! I'm not that much of a gear head, but can usually figure these kinds of things out.

My real question is this ... do I need to install any extra wiring and/or a relay when hooking up both Low and High tone horns to a 2008 FJR? It doesn't seem as clear as I expected in the instructions I printed. One diagram doesn't mention any extra wiring/relay, but then at the bottom, it mentions a relay, etc.

Yes, you do need to have a wiring harness with a relay. The current draw of the Magnum Blasters will exceed the capacity of the installed horn wiring and switch. "FJRandy" here on the Forum makes a great harness with a relay. Check it out. I've purchased two harnesses from him, for my previuos '05 and for my current '07.

You really need to put a relay in. The blasters draw more amps than the stock horns and could fry the horn switch. There was someone on here that made a plug-n-play wiring harness for this exact problem. I know that murphskits.com has one.

Wood, safe to assume you've already bought the Blasters? While I'm sure they'd be great horns... there are some PIAA (search this site) that are available that don't draw hardly any more current then the OEM horns... thus negating the need for a relay.

wiring in a relay is not really that big of a deal, more time consuming then anything. But was happy not to have to do it with the PIAA horns others mentioned here.

Good luck with it either way... it's nice to have a horn that *might* get heard

Thanks everyone! I do already have the low-tone horn, but still need to pick up the high-tone one. However, if there are some PIAA brand horns that do not need the relay, then I'll attempt to find those here on the forum.

If anyone has a link to those specific PIAA horns that do not require a relay, can you let me know to ensure I get the correct ones?

So it's really 2 sets of PIAA horns that are being talked about in that thread. But I went with the ones pictured from Amazon (that 44 is for 2 horns btw). It was actually pretty easy to install them. But the "bracket" for the oem horns should be removed and these attach all the way up where the oem bracket attaches. I found some rubber gromets that fit and act as the "vibration dampeners" the oem brackets provide.

The oem wire on the right hand side (facing the bike) had to be gently pulled out to reach the connectors. Thankfully there was enough "extra" in there behind the fairings.

This is a picture of mine installed:

You can see they block very little of the radiator, obviously a good thing. quite high up and no touching from the fender or when lock to lock. And I'd say they are almost as loud as a Stebel. Not quite but certainly get yer attention. Better the stock no doubt!

Seeing this thread; wanted to mention what was mentioned prior.

The rubber grommets are very necessary. Not only for vibration, but to keep the horn from

shorting out; and also make double sure that the existing stock horn wires are properly

taken care of with plenty of tape coverage and secured.

One of mine jumped loose and caused some shortages.

Actually the Regular Sports Horn is the slightly cheaper way to go. No wiring, no relay and no cutting and only $45 for the pair (yes, 2 of them 400Hz+500Hz) on Amazon. Claimed to be 115db (each).

They're only 115dB according to the link. Much less than the 138dB Magnum Blasters, as dB is not a linear measurement, or so I heard.

Yes, the Magnum Motorcycle Horns are 139 db.

1) from the pictures I've seen of these installed, the regular ones seem to fit better? Haven't done the slim line ones, but the pictures, they just don't seem to fit in the FJR cavity that well... I could be wrong on that, picture angles and all.

2) went with the higher pitched ones (500 and 600 I think it is). These are loud, guys. They will certainly get yer attention, and even piss off some people near you. I've had 2 or 3 stebels on other bikes, and these are pretty close. Since this is subjective, I'd say at the least, these are a dramatic improvement over the stock meeeep beeeeep!!

500+600 combo = European Import sound. (Higher sharper pitch).

400+500 combo = Detroit steel. (Deeper, lower pitch).

I installed the Hella Supertones. They are Fantastic! I PM'd Just Roy for some technical advice and he told me that they suck about the same amount of juice as the

original horns so I didn't even need to use the relay that came with them. He was right! I just switched out the old with the new. That's it! Easey Peasey Install!

I have my riding buddies honk their horns and I honk mine and they Shit their Pants at how loud mine are!! Thanks Roy!! :clapping:

I recently replaced my stock horns with a pair of Magnum Blasters that were sold with the bike. I think they are just generic auto parts horns. I was disappointed when I heard them on the bike. Although they are louder, they sound like an old Buick and in my opinion, do not prompt a response from listeners (particularly wildlife).

There is something about the sound of a motorcycle horn that I like and I want to revert back to this but want to achieve more db's . Do any of the aforementioned horns on this thread sound like they came of a Japanese bike?
