...that Yama is starting a recall program...has to replace the entire instrument cluster...all your mileage readings will go back to zero.

Let's see, make an appointment, spend an hour getting to the dealer, leave the bike for a minimum of one, more likely two, days, spend another hour getting there, waste 15 minutes looking at the new white VFR on the floor (multi-line dealer), stand in line in service department, get on the bike, ride off, and...durnit, have to go back, they din't tighten/reinstall (enter appropriate screwup here) correctly, finally get back on the road, and...now you can see what your instantaneous mpg is, perhaps the most useless "feature" ever put on a motor vehicle?

Maybe if I have to take the bike in for something else, but otherwise, nah. 20 years ago I had a high-zoot BMW coupe with the same feature. Back then I thought it was totally stupid. Still do.

What's the consensus, get it fixed because, well, it's free and it might make a difference in resale, or why waste the time and energy? Or something else?

Just wonder how they will do that here in the states. Wouldn't that require a flag on your title??

WARNING---ODOMETER DISCREPANCE!!!!!

Anytime the odometer is altered, it shows on the title so if it is sold the new owner know it has been changed and not actual.. Smitty

Since the Odo is electronic, is there some way your mileage could be entered on the new cluster?

Interesting. The instant km/l reading on my Canadian machine is right - I guess that 'Euro' applies to British bikes only then?

What? Me worry?

I'll wait to worry about it until I receive my recall notice here in good ole Oreeeeegunnn. Until then, I wish the Euros luck with this issue.

I say let the Euros do the install and be the guinea pigs. Let them find out what is effed up from this fix.

That said - and assuming that the fix is actually proper - I will probably let them do it when I get my next service done. They can sync the TB's that they didn't do at the 600 mile service, too.

Naw....you guys should wait until they find something else seriously wrong with the 06 model...then go and have them both done at the same time. Yes, there will be something else wrong with it.

Not according to the posts on the Euro site. Apparently there was a simple software error, it should have had a maximum of 99.9 mpg.

But again, is there really any reason to go to the bother of getting this fixed?

Some on the Euro forum suggested Yama orta offer the option of a couple hundred bucks free service in lieu of the replacement. That I'd do.

Mebbe we should start an email bombardment to Yama asking for such? Who would know who to bombard?

Usually with these types of instrument clusters there is a way to put your current mileage in. In the USA they will have to, otherwise you have to mark the title with the odometer discrepancy.

+1 All bikes sold in the US with electronic odometers have the capability OR the ECM does. I'll bet money the FJR is no different. You'll wheel in, the'll check your current mileage, program up a new display and you're good to go.

I'd get it fixed.

BTW - have you heard the new AE models have a programming error also? They shift from 1st to 3rd then back to 2nd then to 4th then 5th...

The odometer reading on the '05 and earlier is stored in the ECU. Even if all power is lost (battery disconnected or fails) the odometer reading is retained in the ECU. But, the two tripmeter values and clock setting are lost if the battery is disconnected, or if the battery voltage sags too low during starting, or if the backup power fuse opens.

I'd guess that the '06 odometer reading is also stored in the ECU.

Will they have to change out the entire instrment cluster including speedo and tach? I HOPE SO! My buddy "did me a favor" and washed my bike off on our Alaska trip- He Scratched the SH#@ out my Speedo and tach.

Actually the mileage is in fact stored within the instrument cluster, as well as the MPG function. The dealers as of this time do not have the capability of reprogramming the cluster, or changing the mileage. So if they replace your cluster, mileage goes to zero. Dont ask me how I know, but you could say I have a very good source.

P.S.

Bulletin will be coming soon to dealers for how to deal with this problem, most likely getting a new instrument cluster.

Actually, now that you mention it, neither do HD dealers. You have to order the new cluster with the mileage programed in at the factory. Yamaha may be able to do the same thing.
