..bunch of stuff about Westone products, and a mention of Skullcandies...
Did you add Comply tips or did you just use the stock silicone pieces?

The difference is staggering. And the "pain points" you note, are eliminated by the tips as well.

Of course the SQ isn't going to rival Westone, but for a total investment of $30 ($15 for SkullCandy TiTans off Steepandcheap.com and $15 for Comply T400 direct from Comply) I am a-ok with that. Riding my bike isn't exactly the best environment for music listening...
I used the stock tips, but with the skull candies, it wasn't that they were painful (others were), it was that I couldn't get them to stay in my ears when I pulled on my helmet. They sit farther outside the ears then the Westone units, which sit completely recessed in my ears. I agree that if you can get them to stay in while sliding your helmet down over your ears, then $30 is a lot better then the price of a Westone unit. But if you have the cash to spend, and you want to buy once and be happy and get the most comfort and best sound, then I'd buy a Westone again. And while the bike isn't the best environment for sound, they block enough external noise to make is a decent listening environment, and one that I spend all most two hours every day in, so for me it is worth it.
I can understand that. The Comply tips actually make the 'phones hold much better in your ear. It's just another benefit to them. Comply also makes longer/deeper tips that block more sound that would really allow your 'phones to stay in place - comfortably.

Good news is you can put the Comply tips on just about anything. But IMO where they really shine is when they take an inexpensive set of 'phones (under $50) and make them feel as good as a far more expensive set.

I tried the Skullcandy's last summer. Sound great, but for some reason, even with the Comply tip's, I just couldn't get them to stay in there and block enough wind noise. The ER6i's, while they don't sound as good, go much further in and that works for me.

thanks all for your help. You have given me lots to think about and research on the net. Given that I usually wear ear plugs, I am not in a rush. I will probably just wait to see which ones I can get for a good price.

ride safe.

Hey Back,

LIke you, I did a lot of research on the net. To a degree, you get what you pay for. I've found that cheaper units usually have cheaper sound. On another note, about 75 bucks will buy you a set of in-the-ear ear buds from Apple. The research I did revealed that they had reliability issues. So I chose another brand, also made for apple, with a better quality switch. That switch was a big factor for me because I wanted to be able to change volume or skip to the next song without having to grab the iPod. As you probably know, that's what the switch is for, and that's why I chose a product made to be compatible with apple. I also found some very favorable reviews for the Klipsch S4i. And as I said, after nearly a year and a half, they've worked flawlessly.

After reading through this thread and others I picked up a set of Klipsch S4i's at Best Buy the other day. Really like this, they seemed to be the lowest profile they had. you can wear them in 2 different positions, just like yu normally would, and a "sport" position where the wires go up around the ear. I tried both and it seems the sport position keeps them in my ear the best when putting my helmet on. Really comfortable too, but we'll see after a ride.

German made klipsch has a ear plug type also, check their site. I have home audio that is klipsch and it is simply outstanding. I use er6i and really like them, they provide several tips, foam being the quietest.
Very nice product. I have Klipsch in my home as well and sold their products many years ago when I sold high end stereos for a living. FYI, Klipsch is not a German company. They started in Hope, Arkansas and later moved to Indiana. They are indeed an American company.

I got the apple in-ear headphones with the ipod control and they work great, keep sound down about as much as ear plugs and I'm able to hear the music great without turning them up much.

Apple has since released the technology so quite a few other manufacturers now offer the controller. Can't beat it, skip tracks, change volume, pause. $70. With my Sliks helmet liner they stay in my ears well if I put my helmet on carefully.

I used the Skullcandy Ink'd ear buds for about a year. The tips do wear out, as lately I have a hard time keeping them in my ears when pulling my helmet on. I just received (and haven't had a chance to try on the bike yet) my custom cast earsets that I had done at AZ Bike Week. I have been using them on all the flights I've been on lately, and I couldn't be happier. They block out the all the background noise, screaming children and general ruckus, and I have no problem keeping the volume low on my iPad while watching movies.
