Is Loud "Kerchunk!" normal?

I have a 2007 with 7400 miles on it. No mechanical problems to speak of and the bike has been rock solid. However, I was wondering if hearing a loud, "KERCHUNK!" is normal when going from neutral to 1st gear? This is from a dead stand still. The gears shift fine but this noise seems loud to me. Thoughts?

The FeeJ (at least mine) does have a rather huge hit going into first gear from neutral. I mitigate this by starting it in gear.

My Duc with a dry clutch did this also. Some say the FJR clutch plates need to be soaked better, etc. I think it's just inherent to the bike.

All the FeeJ's I ride with clunk hard into gear too.

Unfortunately, THis is a Yamaha trait that we all have to live with.

I think the AE's even do it! :dntknw:

 
Never had a bike that didn't-starting in gear helps but is harder on the starter tho breaking the clutch plates loose by rolling with the clutch in helps and mine clunks worse when warm such as sitting at a light in neutral which I NEVER do anymore since I got tapped by a dizzy gum cracking cell talking makeup applying clueless giggling frizzy haired blond chick [cute tho] but I digress was that a run on sentence?

 
Many motorcycle constant-mesh transmissions exhibit this 'condition'. There was one Japanese brand (years ago -- and I can't remember which...) that had a brake on first gear -- so that when you moved the shift-lever down it slowed the gear's rotation.

What's going on is: the spinning gear (attatched by shaft from the clutch -- if the clutch had zero parasitic drag, this would be much less an issue) is being physically locked to another gear which is stationary (attatched by shaft & gears to the rear wheel).

All that rotational speed must stop -- "Kerchunk!"

Sometimes when I goose the throttle a bit after holding the clutch in for 15 seconds or so it goes, "snick".

What can I say.... the FJR is like a woman..... clunk one time snick the next.

pull in the clutch, let it out.. pull in again and drop the bike into gear

OK... I don't see why or how that would work, but I'm open to anything. I'll try it!!

PS - The reason I am confused is because double clutching on a car is used when shifting between gears, and involves pushing in the clutch and shifting to neutral, then letting the clutch out and blipping the throttle, then disengaging the clutch again and shifting into the next gear, all in an attempt to match the speed of the unsynchronized gears and prevent grinding. That's quite a bit different than what's happening here where the problem is caused by incomplete disengagement of the clutch at a standstill.

But like I said, if it works, I'm all for it!!

I like the Kerchunk. It lets me know I've hit first when I am rolling to a stoplight. I hate it when I try to start in 2nd gear.
Huh? :blink:

I only get the kerchunk when shifting from Neutral to 1st while standing still. Not downshifting from 2nd to 1st, and especially not while still rolling.

You might want to look into that further, Tex. :unsure:

 
You've obviously never been on a group ride :)

It sounds like a group of BMW's when we all have to stop at a light. On the upside that's the only time we hear it :)
