Thanks, all, for the friendly (from friends) advice.

Since I've been commuting on the KLR for the last couple of weeks it is a different experience. Lacking the power of the bigger bike I can't get myself into speed or acceleration problems. I pick my spots for passing and lane sharing and keep my speeds to a more normal rate. It doesn't cost me but a couple of minutes AND it's still fum.

I had not realized the "attitude" I carry when riding the FJR and part of that attitude is the belief that a certain "spot" in the commute should be mine to occupy.

Just a note of observation about the assumptions we make or carry when commuting.

Those could add to the feeling of tension you feel. :dntknw:

They say advice is worth what you pay for it. Well I paid big for it but it's now 2nd hand and worth what it is.

I went to the Mayo Clinic some years back expecting to find a brain tumor or something serious.

Tests, tests and more test. The last Doctor I saw was a old guy probably could have retired years ago.

He did diagnose an imbalance of fluid in the inner ear but the advice was stop being so hard on yourself.

We often blame others for the predicament we find ourselves in but truly it is of our own doing.

We let others influence who we should be, what we should be and where we should be.

Notice I said we let. Breathing is great advice but sometimes we need help learning to really breathe .

Take a yoga class and learn how to breathe. Yeah, yeah only girls do yoga. So what. Take some time

for yourself to think about your life. Don't do this while riding. If you need to make changes in your

life, make a plan. One year , two year just work toward it. Maybe you need to move. Go somewhere that the commute isn't so crazy.

I had to make a decision whether to stay in a job that was killing me so I could have a more money in retirement

or just retire and lower my expectations. I retired and it's working out. Surprise surprise I really don't

care if I drive the newest, fastest whatever any more or have the nicest house.

I equate stress with freedom and freedom with choices. When we have choices there is more freedom and less stress.

Like I said advice is worth what you pay for it and this is free. Stop being so hard on yourself.

We'll set you with Madame Leticia for a 3-way with Maria and Consuela, that will relieve you of all of your M/C stress! jes' sayin' and nuff' said!!!

To the OP question posed in the title...

I would say that my motorcycle is actually extending my life...I feel more alive when on the bike than when off. More attuned to the pleasures of this world than when off. More mingled with the varying moods when varying weather hits during a trip. In short...more alive and aware.

Because of this, I am also more aware of the lack of care other fellow commuters travel with...they care less about my well being than what I consider a bare minimum. Since during MY commute, I am unable to ride to work in a way that keeps a sufficient buffer with those others that do not care whether I arrive safely ot not...I choose to commute in a car, and vacation by FJR.

I would love to commute by FJR, but I hate broken bones, vertebrae, or having my insides explored by medical professionals...or anyone else for that matter. Therefore, I reserve my riding for the lonely road...the road that allows my mind to wander, to think of big things, to think of small things. Then in the sporty sections, to engage all my senses in a rush of riding the curves and the hills...

No...my motorcycle is not killing me. Even if my days end on some lonesome road experiencing life...
