Is there an easy heat fix for the 05?

This mod requires only two parts...
1) 2.25"X2.25"X42" open cell foam (McMaster-Carr Supply 30100 Charcoal K26758)
2) 1 can spray adhesive (3M Super 77)

Remove right panel...
1 Right Panel

Second picture right panel...
2 Right Panel

Cut foam like the V groove, glue and position...
3 V Groove

Cut foam to fill gap between the factory foam blocks...
4 Foam Fill Gap

Glue and position as in picture...
5 Glue And Position

Then cut additional block, glue and position on top of the gap block you just did in the previous step...
6 Additional Layer

With leftover foam, stuff into frame gaps...
7 Frame Gap 1
8 Frame Gap 2

Additional foam should be stuffed above the clutch housing also...

With the two mods you know have tamed this fire breathing beast.

I also read about cutting holes in the lower fairing to let fresh air in but I haven't needed that, there's still some heat down low on the right side for me but it's not bad since I'm always wearing boots and now my crotch doesn't get hot nor my legs it really works.

Something else I have done is to slip a length of half inch pipe insulation onto the top of the fairing between the fairing and the tank on both sides. It doesn't help cool down the tank but it does keep some of the hot air off of the rider.

No need to cut holes. That was people experimenting early in the process.

Instead of pipe insulation, I just used closed-cell foam from a shipped package. Just check to see how water beads up on it.

Here is another mod to reduce heat on the Gen 1 FJR. Note: I found this, but I do not have a Gen 1, so I can not vouch for the effectiveness. The link is not secure, so everything there is at your own risk. I would not expect great result from this minor mod, but then again, maybe every little bit helps.

I put the insulated self adhesive freezer wrap under the tank on my '04 way back in the day. That was enough for that bike. Bikes seem to vary widely on how hot they feel, as do rider's perceptions.

Another fix action if you're still looking for more things to help - LINK Lots of other info there for the Gen I bikes. This was THE source back in the early years.

Stop hugging the tank people. Wear real gear. If it's still bothering you, don't be an ***** and "wait until Winter" to do a simple job, do it now. And for Dog's sake, stop whining about something as simple as removing or lifting the tank.

If I recall discussions of the day, any mod that bypassed the radiator caused engine temps to rise, which eventually caused even hotter gas tank temps.

Cutting vents was a very early, failed test by some. Bypassed radiator and does nothing to reduce heat. All these bikes show normal operating temps so it's not about the bike being "too hot" it's about the air flow being too hot "for you". All bikes in TX summers are hot for the rider.

Yes, fabricating and installing the metal Cromeit piece helped mitigate the heat on my '05 quite a bit. I've had it installed for about 16 years now, with no ill effects on engine temp. That, plus insulating the bottom of the fuel tank and the sides around it, have made my FJR about as hot for this rider as any other large displacement motorcycle can be.

In fact, I tested it again, earlier this week, by riding in an ambient temperature of about 109F; the kind of weather that makes it cooler to keep your helmet visor down. It was still hot (duh), but tolerable.
