My new Pirelli "E" sits in a garage about 900 miles away (don't ask).

Do you think I can make it there, or should I buy another one and try to make that trip for my next tire change? I know it wouldn't be safe for wet roads, but I think the rains have subsided somewhat for the season.

It didn't look a whole lot worse before we started last weekend's SS1K, but it was better.

I don't mind showing up with cords visible, I just don't want to have the air escape en route. Those Italian moments are few and far between, but I seem powerless to resist the urge.

Ummm, tire is looking pretty square to me! you might want to put your other exhaust on before you leave, otherwise, along the way, some might think your trying to impress the Hardly folks!

According to the George Zelenz School of LD riding, you've got a few more miles on that thing...

Dang Toe! Glad to see there are other crazy SOBs out there like me that will get every last mile out of a tire. That tire looks the same as my current rear. Outstanding.

I wold NOT take a 900 mile trip however. I have been amazed at how slow the rear Avon wears at this point, I figure due to the increased surface area it is now riding on. But you gotta be getting close to the belts. That tire is WAY past the wear bars in the center. You might make 900 miles with extremely conservative riding, but I would be extremely doubtful that it would. And once you see the slightest inkling of belts or internal tire structure, that's it man. Silly to push it any more. I amsurprised you ran an SS1k with that puppy. You got some big ones, my friend.

I would consider yourself lucky to have gotten so much life out of that poor, raggedy-ass Avon, and mercifully let that tire move on to tire heaven.

Get your firesuit on, cause me thinks there are some flames headed your way.

BTW, how many miles on that sucker?

Bingo! That's the kind of info I seek. Flame away. BTW, it sits at 8500 miles. A lot of luggage-laden two-up riding means not getting as much action from a tire, but oh those hotel nights!

At least 900 miles left on that tire (assuming you can ride in a straight line while tipping the bike at a 45 degree angle...)

Wow! Only 8500 miles. Mine currently has 11,700 on it, and the last one I replaced at 12,750 and it didn't look quite as bad as yours.

Still, all one-up miles on those, and unfortunately, no, "but oh those hotel nights!". :(

Does Eve have a sister?

:p

I think if you ride in a reserved manner you'd have good chances. Most rear tire wear is caused during accel and braking, and if you minimize how much throttle and rear brake you use, you can significantly reduce tire wear compared to what you would do in a normal 900 miles. A lot of freeway riding and the difference would be minimal, but baby the thing and ride it!

Pay attention to any odd feelings in the back, ect. I know it's not an avon, but i put a nearly 3" wide flat spot across the back of the bridgestone and never saw a cord.

Just think...Skoot as a brother in law. That would cause more worry than that tire!

Wow, that's one sad looking tire. If you fill the entire thing with Slime, drive in a straight line while leaning to one side, and don't stop or even change speed on the route, you may be safe. I'd just have the existing garaged tire shipped to me or purchase another. $10 in shipping is far less expensive than a tow for Mr Toe.

I would take that tire for 900 miles, no problamo, as long as you are *reasonable* with the throttle.

Though I'm sure the tire would be struggling toward the end....

Nothing a black Sharpie couldn't add another 1,000 miles too......

However, explaining the playa dust and shell casings to the authorities is a completely different matter.

If that was my tire and I was 900 miles from home and didn't have any other options, I would check the air pressure, slow down, and re-evalute the tire every 100 miles. I wouldn't leave home with a tire like that unless it was to take it somewhere very close for replacement.

Toe, if you decide to go for it....please throttle back and take care....

Ride Safe...

Ron

Toe... here's a coincidence... I also have about 8500 on my Avons, and am replacing with Stradas... prolly tomorrow. Rare 2-up riding, but there's a problem with right wrist discipline.
