About a month ago I bought a Ohlin shock from a gent in Canada. I paid for the shock and shipping and he shipped to me. About 4 days later, it shows up and another great deal.... Well on Saturday I get a f@ckin bill from UPS for $40.57.

Discription of charges...

Entry prep fee $22.25

Dispursement fee $ 5.00

Duty amount $11.32

Processing fee $ 2.00

Total $40.57

I paid the guy for shipping, and I am sure he will say it is a customs thing. UPS says it paid this on my behalf... Has this happened to anyone??

If I don't pay it what will happen?? I didn't agree or sign anything ect.

CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT!!!!!

I have bought stuff from up north (Canada) before and this never has happened...

Thanks Smitty

It is a customs thing... and that's why I no longer buy from and/or ship to Canada... it's a pain in the butt. Most likely he didn't complete the proper forms, which aren't easy for the average Joe.

I don't know what will happen if you don't pay. Maybe UPS will flag your address and stop delivering to you until you pay it!

If you want to get confused, look at this page from UPS... just a few of the forms you need to complete for shipping.

I've shipped to and from Canada and that's never happened to me. I've always declaired things to be gifts of little value. I suspect maybe the shipper made some sort of statement as to value $$$ and and customs charged accordingly. That hoser Canadian was probably drunk eh!

By the way, USPS is the best way to ship international.

What it is, is a UPS rip-off. $29.25 of the charge is purely administrative and it costs them ZERO, because they extract the data from their computers and send the paperwork to Customs electronically.

AND, I'm willing to wager that the duty wasn't the right amount either, since they don;t know what he shipped.

Use USPS/Canada Post. ALmost free, handled properly and no rip-off.

OR - better yet, NEVER BUY FROM CANADIANS. That way I'll get to buy what I want without competition from south of the US border and save a bundle.

I have had this happen to me when I've purchase parts from my supplier. They have a US distributer in SD and a warehouse over the boarder. Once they shipped the part straight from the warehouse in stead of the US distributer. I got the same list of duty crap from UPS. But, I was dealing wih a business, who I had already paid for shipping. They absorbed the charges.

As far as giving you insight - I won't troll that but you sure are inviting it.

I had a puppy that whined alot, but he stopped after 6 months.

OK - Here is some insight - You got a steal on the shock at about 60% off - essentially new. You should be very happy - even with the extra import charges. Congrats on the great buy - you fkn tight ass.

I am only the gent that posted the link for one of our members to find it.
Ohlins

He got a hell of a deal - even with the extra $40.xx in charges.
I don't think he was complaining about the"gent". I think you hit the "nail on the head" when you said "extra $40.xx" in charges.

His thread is titled is UPS trying to... since this was unusual in his experience (& mine), he was trying to get some feedback. No call for calling him "you fkn tight ass" :glare:

Would you say that if he was standing right next to you? Geezzz...

I am sure if Bruce went to Mc Donald for a breakfast and it was normally $3.95, and the next morning it was $43.95 he would pay it. Because at $3.95 is a good deal, whats a extra $40. bucks Bruce must be loaded... I am talking about UPS (read the post) .... Bruce, whats your problem, how dare you call me a ****** tight ass. I looked at a old post where you were the one that put a link for the shock on this board. It looked to me you wanted a Thank you for the link. Well I seen it over there (other board ) before you even posted it. One more thing Bruce, :****:

Smitty,

What's your problem... you're being mean to Bruce.

Not!

After reading some other replies... I guess I should have been more detailed. Shipping to and from Canada is okay if you are dealing with a business. I've done two deals with private individuals in Canada and it was a pain both times... and I ended up paying more than planned. Again, most likely it was a mistake in paperwork.

Have you contacted UPS to get details?

Have a good one...

@Bruce... :****:

:yahoo:

I think I might just tell UPS to bite my ass. they should have disclosed those fees in advance.
Mehaffydr. Is your avatar an example of a "tight-ass"? :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Like others said, never use shipping companies over the border in either direction.

Always, always use USPS or Cdn Post.

Sometimes there are still extra charges but nothing like UPS or Fedex.

Get the proper documents and ship it right, and the price is nice.

I don't know what you need going south but going north is not complicated.

+1, never use UPS or Fedex for cross border shipping.

I suspect too that maybe the sender declared the country of origin for the product as Sweden, triggering the duty charge - if the country of origin were declared as Canada then NAFTA would have kicked in and there wouldn't have been any duty. But even then I'd bet $ (CAD or USD) that UPS would still charge the "Entry prep fee" for filling in the customs form, and the "processing fee" for writing up the bill for the "Entry prep fee", and they may have even come up with some other fees to boot - maybe a "customs brokerage fee" and a "customs brokerage fee service charge"?

Canada Post and USPS provide timely service, with good express post delivery times and no BS fees. Can't speak for what additional charges there might be for southbound goods sent via Canada Post/USPS; on things I've ordered from the US all I get dinged is our 6% federal and 7% provincial sales taxes and a $5-8 handling charge (depending on whether the mail is regular or express) levied by Canadian customs - on a recent US$90 order from Cyclegadgets sent USPS Global Priority mail the taxes and handling charge was under CAD$17. And from what I can tell all Cyclegadgets had to do was fill in the USPS Customs Declaration CN22 form - when I've sent stuff south all I've had to do was the same thing, fill in the postal customs declaration and pay the postage.

Smitty, the problem is you didn't know and maybe the seller didn't either. This is one instance where it is more beneficial for the purchaser to use Goverment Services rather then Private Enterprise. The problem is that most individuals do not import or export often and get caught with high fees from companies like UPS.

Here are the published fees for importing from Canada via UPS.

https://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources...stoms/fees.html

VALUE FOR DUTY UPS STANDARD SERVICE FROM CANADA**

$0.00 to $200.00 No Charge*

$200.01 to $1,250.00 $22.25

$1,250.01 to $2,000.00 $33.00

Each Additional $1,000.00 or part thereof $1.60

Note: it states "Value for Duty" , why, because NAFTA eliminated duties for Cdn/US goods crossing the borders and they want to maintain their income.

I have purchased many items from the U.S. over the years for my bikes and I too got stung on the first few. Then a U.S. bike shop advised me they do not use UPS etc. for shipping to customers outside the U.S. because of the additional charges.

I just purchased the R1 shift arm from Gary McCoy and he ships USPS to Canada, reason, it would depreciate any savings I would receive from buying from him and I might source elsewhere.

Always request USPS/Canada Post, in fact I just received a rad guard from the U.K. and they used Royal Post, minimum charges compared to UPS.

+1 on what fossilrider said....I've found the same thing....& I believe I read somewhere that motorcycle parts were supposed to be exempt from duties.....going north or south....but we know they always seem to forget that part cause there's no money in it  ....

You think that's bad, check out DHL shipping fees to Ausieland. When I sold my Gizmo bag to a bloke, he already knew the issues involved. But when I was filling out the forms (residual value=$5.00, used/salvage), I was in sticker shock. Au shipping/import fees were more than the used cost of the bag (which was sold at less than 1/3rd of what it cost me originally).

What a racket!
