After getting my ticker fixed right before departure of WFO4, new cylinder head, valves etc, after a ride out last night, I feel quite sure that the tick has returned. I have just over 6000 miles since the repair, which is about 500 miles more than I got the first time around. I cannot say whether or not I got the new and improved valve seals that are being discussed, but I was part of the cylinder head replacement group earlier this summer. The sound is not loud yet, but I will ride on until it becomes unmistakable again as in the past.

No ranting this time around just completely baffled and disappointed. :(

Probably a safe bet that you did not.

And regardless, there is no proof that these new valve seals are the holy grail fix. Only when we know that not a single 2006 motor ever develops the tick, can we begin to feel good about the new seals being "the fix".

I am tremendously bummed, for you, 'bro! :( No one should have to go through this agony twice!

I called Yamaha this afternoon and a dealer about the previous tick fix and there is no record showing any warranty work done against my vin#. Yamaha says they will get to the bottom of it and let me know.

The rep threw out the idea of the original tick fix being done as goodwill and not warranty work, thus not showing any info against the vin#. Thier guess being that yamaha may not have thought it was a problem, but did the fix for me anyway.

Just curious if any other fixed ticker bikes show the repair against the vin #?

Skyway, I thought mine had started ticking again and it turned out that it needed a valve adjustment. Mine started ticking at ~3500 miles after the head swap.

And although it was the #1 exhaust valve that was making the most noise and mimicing the tick in every way, the valve adjustment took care of it.

I thought the clearance was waaayyy out but the replacement shim was only the next size up. I guess what I'm saying is that it doesn't take a lot of clearance to make a lot of noise and you don't get the factory shims in a field replacement, you get the field shims. So instead of getting shims in.01mm increments you get shims in .05 increments.

Now in my "glass half full but was dirty when they poured your drink" way, Whose to say the same thing responsible for the tick isn't the same thing responsible for the valve clearence needeing adjustment. I certainly didn't put enough miles on this summer to really find out, but as far as I can tell it hasn't gotten worse since the adjustment, and you KNOW I have been listening.

More noise from the valve trane when hot as compared to my 03 valves but I attributed that to the harder valves. Smooth and quiet when cold with none of the peck....peck peck...peck.....at idle and no pronounced tickticktick when hot. Yet.

I do completely understand anyones "loss of confidence" though. I've gotten to the point that I only "listen" for it once every 4 or 5 rides because part of me doesn't want to know if its coming back and wondering if today will be the day it starts ticking again really does suck all of the enjoyment out of it.

But I digress. I'll let someone else start the support group for tickers Or gee maybe that should be its own section.

That would be good if this this is all I am dealing with.

Yamaha has authorized the bike to be torn open again, first to verify the workmanship of the previous repair and second to diagnose and fix whatever the problem is.

I will say that the rep I talked with yesterday was less than impressed with the previous fix in regards to the way in which it was handled. On the positive side, the notes which were left in the system, even though there are many, are very thorough. I was also informed that this time around, they are putting everyone involved on notice, that it must be dealt with ASAP.

If and I mean if, it turns out to be the tick again, where do I go from here with this motor? I certainly could not sell it on to someone, as ethically this would not sit good with me.

Well, you know what I would do.... and you know what I *did*, when I was in your very shoes....

Get it fixed. Then punt it to the curb.

Your kung fu is not strong with this bike. Unload it. Then get another.

Let them fix it and then keep riding it as before. Forget about the tick until/unless it comes back yet again. If it does, make them fix it again. If the tick does not return after a reasonable number of miles and you are still not comfortable with the bike then you could sell it with an easier conscience.

I've said this even before I took delivery of my FJR. If it starts to tick, I'm stripping her down, and kicking her to the curb! I purchased the YES warrantee to be nice to whoever purchased it. I figured this way they would still have some way of repairing it, and my karma points would still be safe.

I love this bike, but since I'm starting to get more heavily into LD riding (plan on trying for the 2007 IBR), I need a steed that I can rely on. I don't want a bike that I'll constantly be wondering if it's going to strand me 5000 miles from home.

I too feel really bad for ya on this one. I firmly believe that this bike is more techno than many dealers can handle. Think that the cure or "fix" can be as bad as the ticking when the inexperienced deal with the problem. At Biketoberfest I let the same sentiments known to two of the reps there, they just nodded. I believe that they know the level of the service is not nearly what it should be. I say this to many of the brands I've owned and those of close friend's bikes as well. Usually returns from the dealer service dept. with some sort of an issue.

I think Yamaha should just send all us guys who've had to live through the tick each a new 06. It's the least they could do for all of the r&d and consumer education work we've done.

Oh sorry, I was dreaming again.

Well, if that happens, I think I hear a funny noise coming from my valve train... ;)

Frank has developed the slightest tap tap, left side, when hot, at idle. I suspect the worst, but shall wait to see what develops. 16,000 miles now. ****.

Sorry to hear about this again... but thanks for the updates you provide on the situation. If it the same problem, Yamaha should makes yours a case study....tell them you'll swap them your bike for an '06 for all the 'emotional trauma'!

Skyway, I think you got a friday afternoon bike.

If you like the FJR, get another like WC did.

Sorry you have that much crap with it.

Having to rip the engine out of the bike a second time for the same problem is outrageous.

Yamaha is either clueless or they don't give a damn about their customers. It's absurd that they keep churning out successive models with this outstanding problem.

Even if they cover the repair costs it's still a major headache for the customer in downtime, hassle, interacting with skeptical service departments, etc.

Yamaha has designed and produced millions of four-stroke engines, all with exhaust valves and valve guides and yet they can't or won't adequately resolve this problem.

This is the worst kind of problem. When it's fixed, it's not fixed. They're hoping you'll sell your problem to someone else.

So far my '04 FJR is OK at 22K miles. But, I have no expectation of it being OK at 30K miles. This is my first Yamaha in 30 years and it'll probably be my last.

You'd think that a powersports company which focuses so much effort on engines would have solved this problem years ago.
