I did not take the Matagami road. The gravel was like riding on marbles. I did not deflate my tires as that would have helped but I was too far from home and did not want to take needless chances. The gravel was fresh and really a pain to ride on and I did not want to dump it and unload everything and start again. Not only that, even though I was on a 1200 GS I still had street tires. Next year I will go to Goose Bay, Labrador and will have more aggressive tires for that. I will also probably bring the KLR so get ready.
I went down to Amos and rode about 60 miles on gravel down there going NE. It looked like paved road on the map but once on it I was commited. Luckily I had plenty of gas and there was a number of farms along the way so not too bad. Just had no idea when the gravel was going to end. Once I hit pavement life was good but gas was getting lower and started getting nervous as gas stations just weren't showing up and the nearest towns were miles apart. Luckily came across a small service station. As ussual, no English spoken here. Gas management up there is critical as stations are scarce. Even with 8.7 gallons of gas I had several anxious times.
Great trip guys. Had a great time. Next time we surf the rapids.
