JB, I hear yah and applaud your efforts. Seems you might have adequate power to make a change here. How about a mass motobike demonstration at BaZerkley later this month? We could go hooligan on them and ride our pfft pffft skooter bikes while chanting 'Fight injstice, ride a bike' or some other nonsense that only Bazerklians understand...
Ride bikes naked; Berk's understand that :)

Green, friendly looking motorcycle, as requested. Sustainable if gassed up. Feel free to use in any and all endeavors.

The (rather large) company that I work for has a similar policy. They do not allow motorcycles to be used for "business use". This would include running business related errands during work hours or travelling to and from meetings or customers. Their reasoning is that they are "self insured" and have determined that the risk of personal injuries resulting in claims is too high.

Since they provide me a cage and keep the tank full, I really can't argue with their rule.
Same policy where I work, to and from work is OK but not at work. When I'm on call I get paid to drive into work so on a callout I can't ride the bike into work :dribble: A couple of years ago we had an empolyee crash his bike while traveling between work sites, things got messy I guess.

U of M sent me to a series of conferences in Norfolk, which screamed ROAD TRIP to me. They paid in cash the equivalent of airfare there and back, and rental car fees, which pretty much covered my fuel for Frank and some hotel time. The trip was 10 times more enjoyable cuz of the ride.

Careful what you wish for :) They may only exempt Hardley's as the official Berkeley two wheel vehicle :)

Go get em JB

I can't imagine anyone protesting in Bazerkly, but I'm behind you on this one JB. Power to the people! PM. <>< :yahoo:

I looked at the AMA's website, but did not find any fun facts and features supporting the green sustainability environmental friendliness of the motorcycle. Anyone got any info on that?
"The people, united, can never be defeated! The people, united, can never be defeated!" :yahoo:

Jb
There's some good info here. Check out the Motorcycle Fact Sheet.

https://www.ridetowork.org/

I had a related issue where I work. We had one parking spot reserved for bikes close to the building, but then someone in the security dept decided it would be better used as manager parking. I gathered some info, rallied the troops and lobbied to get the spot back. We now have 2 spots reserved that are used by 6 to 8 bikes during the summer. :yahoo:

Get as many folks as you can to start writing similar letters. Sounds like your taking the right approach, but I'd refrain from making any assumptions about the current policy (motorcycles dangerous). If you can get someone high in the food chain to advocate for you you'll have a much better chance of changing the policy. I'd try and find other advocates with the ability to influence policy.

Good Luck!

Ionbeam, duly noted, I feel chanstised.

permission to go to a corner and wimper?

Sorry JB -- I missed seeing 'stryg8r' referencing "Ride to Work" earlier.

I'm seconding the motion (they may even be able to, actually, help -- with a letter/documentation/etc.?).

Well, here at Commie Central, if it ain't a hybrid, or pure electric, it don't count. Odd attitude for an alleged institute of higher learning, but there ya have it.

And here at Stark Industries that has the snazzy star icon.....one gets a slightly reduced per mile rate if they go via two-wheels ($0.52 IIRC)...or over a double if one flies their own airplane ($1.29) somewhere. ;)

We don't have a rate for Segways just yet....

Oh yeah, those academic types are "higher" all right.

Just don't ask those hybrid drivin' sluts what happens to the lead from their batteries every 5-6 years.

As far as I've been able to read/find; there are no such limits where I work. I'm sure no one's ever asked/attempted. I've only seen two cruisers (Suzuki C90? and some hardley) which were really shiny (read: never left town).

Go JB!

No well-reasoned, intelligent post here but I've gotta say that I'm a JB fan. He fights the system! Way to go!

Luckily, the federal government allows personally owned motorcycles for official travel. We have a bunch of guys here who ride on business. The mileage rate is a little less than for a car, but, hell, gettin' paid to ride ain't bad. They also allow personally owned aircraft for official business and will reimburse for that, too.
Sometimes, being a fed ain't so bad. These days, its lookin' pretty damn good.
THANK A TAXPAYER! :glare:

My company did this for my last trip from SoCal to the Bay Area for a technical conference. My mileage at the posted rate would have exceeded the airfare and rental car total, so they reimbursed me as if I had taken the plane and rented the car.

After reading JB's post, I do not know weather to laugh or cry...he does reside in the Bay Area, thats one strike,he lives or works at Berkeley, two strikes, claims to ride, but no bike is listed..foul ball...now we have a pitching change,......
Fifteen post FWFE, note JB's nearly 2,000 posts, now go read some of those posts.
+1 It's always a good idea to figure out who it is that your insulting BEFORE you insult them... do a little research... or maybe even go on a ride with them before passing snide judgements.

Also please review your punctuation and grammar books.

The City of Sydney (Australia) introduced a Motorcycle and Action Plan a couple of years ago.

Motorcycles were seen as "an enjoyable, fuel-efficient and low cost alternative to private vehicle use". To address problems faced by motorcycle riders, the City adopted a Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy and Action Plan.

https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/ABOUTSY...g.asp#Downloads

As I recall, the essence of the plan is that motorcycles do not need to pay for parking meters which encourages 4 or 5 bikes to park in one parking space. The plan also establishes additional free motorcycle parking areas in downtown Sydney. The free parking encourages more motorcycles which results in less cars and less polution.

Jb, don't just try to change the travel reimbursement policy! Go the whole way and lobby Berkley to go Green and adopt a similar similar motorcycle action plan. Maybe to get you to go away quietly, they will find it easier to change the reimbursement policy.

Good luck!
