“Your clutch is cooked.”

That’s how Zach up at Roseville Yamaha summed it up for me. He said the clutch looked as nasty as what he sees on police bikes. (Me, hard on the clutch? I guess it’s indisputable now.)

Although Zach cannot second guess what my mechanic saw and decided when he replaced my clutch 20 or 30K miles ago, he suspects it might have been a good idea to replace the basket, spring, and pressure plate, all of which will get replaced now. The plates are notched and burnt and hanging up.

Unfortunately the bike won’t be ready this weekend, when I was planning to go to L.A. for the long weekend. Parts are coming from all over, including Japan, and the pressure plates are on back order (though Z thinks he knows where to find one).

Good news, sounds like you made the right choice by getting out of the other shop. Glad you are getting taken care of!

Sounds like good news and maybe the happy dance is in order! :yahoo:

Damn, I knew I should have stolen the color-matched lid to the Givi V46 when I had the chance. I figured you wouldn't notice it was replaced with a black one. So much for dibbs on the "part-out!"

Glad to hear this, Hans, and I hate to say it, but one more example of my local dealer's lacking skills in the diagnosis dept.

Thanks, Tim. Okay, let me quote what was on the San Luis Motorsports repair invoice. This is what I paid $134 for:

"Removed lower bodywork, outer engiine cover to inspect starter clutch & rotor tourqe, could see no cuase for damage & engine will need to be torn down to find cause." [All typos SIC.]

I quoted that to Zach, who could not understand why they were fooling with the left side of the engine and starter.

But here's another pet peeve: You spend time explaining your problem to the guy in the showroom behind the counter, and when he communicates it to the guy in the shop, it winds up on the work order as, "Customer was under accerleration [sIC] and there was a grinding noise and now bike will not accelerate."

But I don't care: I'm made of money. :glare:

Starter clutch?!?! Zac is right, WTF?!?!

Glad to hear it's only the clutch Hans. And at least you can take comfort in the knowledge that your baby is in good hands. Not idiots. Most times, that is worth a premium. A lesson this cheap-skate learnede the hard way.

Now....is it time to discuss your clutch technique?

I mean...er...with 100 ft. lbs. of torque is it necessary to fan a clutch like riding a sport bike?

Uhm....on a bike that weighs what the FJR does? :dntknw:

Then again, since you're made of money, and all....you can just write a check! :dribble:

Afterall, Em did get a scholarship and none of the kids needs help with books or anything. Fang doesn't need or want a vacation. Should I go on?

Maybe if you lived in a place with hills there would be a reasonable explanation for this.

This is exactly what I would have expected from your original description. I'll also agree with mike that the bike has plenty of pull without slipping the clutch.

Sounds like this will work out. What is the estimate for the damages in Roseville?

Oh man, a blown clutch pack -- I'm glad for ya! I know what it's like when the actual damage is worse.

As I said it, as he heard it, as he said it, as they heard it... Pulling the engine based on empirical analysis? Be afraid, very afraid. Facts rule

Hans, you got off cheap - imagine what the cost would have been to split the cases. Thank the FJR gods you got it out of there and moved it to Zach.

My hat's off to the FJR forum folk that stood up to help. :good:

Damnit! FJRay, ShinyPartsUp, Old Michael, Fairlaner and Papa Chuy were all 100% WRONG! All five of us had guessed it was the loose nut behind the FJR handlebars!

I am willing to give part marks since there was a loose nut behind the handlebars connected to the clutch lever. I am willing to give most of that group a grade of 'C-' except for Don. I grade Don's effort a 'D' for Don and just because I can. :p

This is all well and good, but who's going to tow it back to the Bay Area for him?

(But I do love a happy ending.)

(No, I'm not talking about at the massage parlor, you mopes.)

I add my good thoughts that that is "all" it is... :yahoo: JB said he was going to get a ride on the back of a Gold Wing to fetch it - I'm kinda thinking that might be worth a group reception party at Roseville just to get that picture... :clapping:
