I wanted to take a second to thank everyone on the forum for posting so much useful information. After several months of lurking and research I am pulling the trigger on my FJR. I have decided to pursue an 06 that is just a short plane flight and a nice 300 mile trip back. She is coming to me with some nice farkles (PCIII and G2 tube installed) the stock and aftermarket wind screen. She has a couple little cosmetic issues - another bike fell against it and left a little hickey. That will get fixed in due time. Only 2000 miles on it and she has fresh fluids and some new tires. The current owner gets some garage space back and I am thrilled. The price was very attractive to the point that I am voilating a long standing rule - I don't finance toys. Well there is a first time for everything. We are finishing up some bank stuff now and soon I will do my fly and ride. Any issues taking riding gear through airport security?

Let the farkling begin. First on the list are some OES Sliders and the Real Time bag reflective decals (I do work for 3M so I have to support the provider).

Ok Saturday is the day. Jump on a plane at 8:00 am. get to destination at 11:30 am (after a connection in DFW). Ride the new to me FJR home. She has fresh fluids and tires so no worries there. Total mileage just over 300.

Now a couple of questions.

1. Turns out the ignition switch recall hasn't been done. How risky is this?

2. Has anyone taken their riding gear through security at the airport. I would like to carry it on. I will put it all in a duffle bag so it stays together. Was curious about the helmet.

The OES sliders are great, although don't worry about the 'sticker color' option because they peeled and started to come off after a month on my bike, so you'll just peel them off anyways. Congrats!

1: Not really that risky. Some have had switches that freaked out and killed the bike, but the majority of us never had a problem...Seems kind of hit or miss, but the switch on my '07 never had an issue. I'm betting you'll be fine.

2: Lots of people have taken their gear on a plane. My wife has flown twice carrying her gear and helmet, and my brother has done the same. The only time anyone had any issue was when my brother flew to Arizona to meet me and pick up his bike. Near the end of the flight, the attendent made some surprised stupid comment about him having a helmet with him. I think he replied that he didn't trust the pilots, so he carried a helmet. She pretty much shut up.

You shouldn't have any issues, so long as your packed stuff fits in the carry-on space.

Congrats on the FJR! You will love it. Sorry to hear about the Nighthawk though. Well, maybe only a little. I had one as a first bike many years ago and have recently been wanting it back. To my surprise, the wife actually liked the idea! At least in theory. What's the 'Hawk going for?

Today was the day. I flew from Austin, TX to Midland,TX this morning. The guy I bought it from picked me up at the airport. We drove to his house. He handed me the keys and I took it for a spin down the road and back. We exchanged the necessary info and I put the rest of my gear on, pointed the bike toward Austin and never looked back.

So now for the experience.

OMG - The smile will need to be surgically removed. The bike now has 305 miles more than when I picked her up bringing the mileage up to 2319. This was my first ride on an FJR I made the right choice. She is quick and nimble. The first part of the journey was filled with very long straight roads. The end of the journey had some nice curves. It was a very good day. Stopped once for lunch, then gas and stretch here and there. Last stop was at Coopers BBQ in LLano - to bring home dinner. All in all it was a great day (maybe a little windy). Had a little discomfort from sitting (sore butt) and leaning forward (wrists and forearms)(bad habits I will need to overcome). She has been bug baptised so I have some cleaning to do.

Some details that were not formerly disclosed. She has a G2 throttle tube already, a K&N air filter and a PCIII nestled under the seat. It is very smooth. I do not know which map is currently loaded. The tires have 1100 miles on them now. It has an aftermarket windscreen but I don't know which one it is.

I have my to do list ready (loctiting screws and such). The first farkle I add will be some OES sliders. The second will likely be the FJR decals on the bags from Real Time.

There is a ding in the left side of the gas tank- it got a kiss from the brake lever and grip of a bike that was on a trailer next to it on a recent trip. It is no big deal and I will likely not do anything to it.

I need to spend some quality time in the parking lot with her. She is much heavier than the Nighthawk and those brakes really bite. I will put the sliders on first.

I also rode today with my new Shoei Qwest helmet. It is very sweet. Quiet. Just a wonderful experience.

Congrats graler on the great deal. And welcome aboard. You didn't say if it is the AE or not. But the 2006 is the best year IMO even with the recalls which can be fixed, usually with out much effort. I would reccomend to contact Brodie and get the needed wire harnesses ie, ignition and spyder. Also, I would suggest finding someone that does paintless dent removal. Out here they are called Dent King, they use special tools that remove minor dents with out repainting. If accessable they can go through the filler opening on your tank and make it like new. I completely understand the "First Time Wow" factor...and the smiles still aren't removed...although, now that the cold, rain, and wet leaves are here, maybe the smile will fade a bit. Happy FJR!
