One time I was at one of those gas stations with the bathroom on the outside of the building, you know, where you have to get a key attached to a miniature baseball bat or something from the attendant to get in to the bathroom. I go into the bathroom, and it's absolutely trashed. Totally disgusting. Like 2 rival gangs of monkeys just had it out in there...you get the picture. I take a piss, stumble out into the fresh air, and go back and return the key. I'm getting back on the bike, and the attendant comes out with the bathroom key, a broom, and a bottle of windex. He sees my bike, and he's like, "Is that a BMW?"

...and that is why this person is a bathroom attendant, cleaning up after monkey gang orgies. If he recognized that an FJR is not a BMW, he would be more successful in life.

As for the loud pipes, I spent a short time in that phase but then saw the light. Motorcyclists as a group have a pretty bad reputation with Joe Public. Irritatingly loud pipes are one way to consolidate that reputation. There is a lame-brain that uses the parking structure where I work. He/she does not park in the designated area for motorcycles. His/her exit route passes a lot of parked cars, at an inappropriate speed for a parking lot, with enough noise to set off the majority of the cars' alarms. Way to impress people, moron!

I too have never understood the loud pipes thing. I usually leave the stockers on my bikes as I do not like excessively loud bikes

At my old apartment, there was a guy who owned a H-D with straight pipes and he would go out at 5am and start the bike up and spend like 10 minutes blipping the throttle to get it "warmed up" before taking off at high RPM to go to work etc. (He tended to ride a lot) Most of the people in the neighborhood wanted to beat him senseless......Amazingly tho, after a while I didn't even notice it anymore.....

When I was a youngster I rode Brit iron. BSA, Triumph, Norton, and I liked them loud. Reverse cones or straight through pipes. Now I prefer only a whisper or swoosh.

If I ever find a 60s BSA to restore, though, it will probably be loud.
