I don't want to take off the side panels, but don't have a Bike Johnny template

think I will try to just eyeball where the engine mount bolt is behind the panels and drill a small hole at that estimated position

stick a rod through and measure to find the center of the bolt

drill another hole and stick a rod through till I got it and then drill the big hole for the slider

I should be able to get close enough for it to work OK ???

any comment, suggestions, advice, etc.

I'm leaving at 5am for the Smokies, Cherohala and Dragon and still need to pack

rushed and want to do this easy and kinda fast

Cheers,

Mike in Nawlins'

There is some procedure for drilling the faring w/o removal. I forgot exactly how it is done. I need to drill a faring myself. I only have a slider on one side right now because I've been chicken to do it.

Let me see if I can find the info.

Mike,

Yes, you oughta be able to make it work going about it this way without the template.

Mike, I did mine without the template. Eyeball it but start with a small drill bit. Once the hole is made, use the same bit to see how close you are to bolt center. The I used a larger drill bit and then a dremel to enlarge the hole and slowly worked it to the correct size and location. Worked out fine for me.

Yea, what he said. I had the template and it was a little off anyway. had to adjust the hole to match on the first side. Then I threw it away and eyeballed the other side with better results.

Hell, drilling holes in a bike is nothing, it's not gonna sink if you do it wrong.

Thanx much all for your help and encouragement

the gang on this forum are the best

drilling holes, I rubbed my hands for a week when the rack I installed on top of my trunk came in and had to drill 4 holes to mount it...but that's just me

maybe those holes in the wrong place will let the air through and less buffeting in a cross wind

yea, that's it...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it

And then do more holes, people will think it's OEM stuff

Mike,

Don't drill those holes!!!

Check in the classifieds. Bounce is selling his old '04 lowers with the holes already drilled. Buy his and install them in case you ever want to go change (like he did) to a no-drill type slider.

Edit - AW crap. I just looked back and his are '03 panels, so no color mach with your cerulean.

damn...already paid for 'em...damn

well, I like a bike that doesn't look like all the others

two tone Feej...yea, that'll work

now if only someone would sell me their '07 ma Yammy trunk and maybe a '06 set of bags

and the '08/'09 black beautys; I know, I'll get some black tires

yea, that's the ticket

<just kiddin' on the lowers purchase, but my mind's realin' at the multi color Feej>

OK, mission accomplished and done per instructions

drilling the holes was nuthin' , getting the stock motor mount bolts out was a *****

finally went out and purchased a 10mm allen socket and converted up to my 1/2" ratchet

still had to lean into it and saw the white powder residue from steel into aluminum

used never-seize on the new bolts and torqued to 29 ft-lbs.

Again, thank you all for your help and encouragement

great Dragon trip...home today (Mon) at 7:30pm safe and sound after 1660 miles

gunna rest and have AIW massage my sore butt and do trip laundry and pack again to head out Wed to SFO at o'dark thirty

thanx for all your support, thoughts, and a prayer or two. There were one or two curves that your prayers worked !!!

and the semi on the 15mph zig/zag along the Ocoee River today may have touched the lead Wing's Leezure Lite pop up camper trailer, as the truck crossed the double yellow with the dually of the trailer totally over. He did "stay right, stay alive" and I was the bitcher and moaner to all the whole trip to mantra that and had to save a life or two. Also, to constantly check mirrors and stay away from vehicles along side, especially coming from the rear and going through one's blind spot.

Oh, air horn saved me twice as grandma and grandpa merged onto the highway from my right and was heading to the right lane with me in it. I looked them in the eye through their door's window with the horn blaring and their head snapped to the left and looked me in the eye with mouth open, kickin' back into the on-ramp lane as I rocketed ahead.

Once, I had no left lane to go into with pickup to my right and was at the mercy of physics of acceration away while blarring the horn and hoping, and they did stay and not come to their left at me with their driver's door. Other time, horn blaring and me glaring at them, then glance to left mirror, both flat one and stuck on blind spot mirror indicated left lane clear, so I took it while accelerating. Stopping or braking would have been a mistake, as that's what they did at the sound of the horn.

99.9% of the trip was perfect, perfect weather, good food, good accomodations at Hunt's Motorcycle Lodge/Campground for dirt cheap price at the foot of the Cherohala on the west side. I'll be back, believe me.

It's a good trip when ya or anyone else doesn't test out their sliders or crash bars.

I did get a warning from TN HP on 129 at the north end along side the lake doing 60 in a 40. I'm glad Jeff got caught behind traffic and I was waiting for him, because just a few minutes before, ahhhhh, we were quite spirited in that stretch when he was chasing me on his Black Beauty '08. Got to luv different owners/riders of Feejers...his was pristine at all times with all stops the polish and diaper comes out. Mine was, ahhhhhh, not.

SFO, here I come, gawd willin' again.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
