looks like Ike will make landfall just to the west of where we live in Friendswood,

I boarded up the house and put everything away this morning.

We are going to try to ride it out here at the house so wish us luck.

Some things about living on the gulf coast are not so good - like this.

You've still got time to leave. I guess you feel pretty good about your odds?

We'll be prayin' for ya.

Well, I am west of you in Sugar Land. The most recent update makes Fort Bend County look like the The Ike Freeway! We are mostly prepared at this point but we are still vacillating on the decision to stay or go. The darn thing is behaving a little like Rita. It keeps fading east at each update. For selfish reasons I hope that trend continues but that would put the storm dead into Houston and that would be an unbelievable mess.

Best wishes for all who will be riding this one out.

Yes, I feel rather bad for thinking "don't hit Florida, pass us by and hit Texas instead!" - I'm sure karma will catch up to me eventually...

I've been wondering about you Mike and Groo and Tim all day today. If any of you guys need a place to stay for the weekend, come on up. I've got plenty of room.

Mike,

You know where my house is... if you need anything after it passes, come on by. We're sheltering in place, as are our neighbors across the street and to our left. We've battened down the hatches, and my only concern is flying debris. We're in an unshaded X floodplane, and should be fine no matter what storm surge comes along. While Ike may still strengthen somewhat, most of the current estimates show a maximum windspeed here of about 87 MPH, which may break a branch or two, and uproot a bush here or there, but shouldn't be causing roofs to disappear.

See ya when it's all over.

I've lived in hurricane country all my life. Mostly NC, some in TX too. The hard part is knowing when to run and being able to suck it up and leave. I definitely understand your choice to stay.

Don't forget to throw a thick blanket over the FJR, just in case.

:)

Holler up as soon as you can if there's anything to be done to help you out. I know a lot of people south of you.

Good luck!

I wish all of my Ike friends the best of luck and wishes!

Stay safe, bodies before property...

We're hunkered in place and while today and this evening will be interesting, should be fine unless we run out of beer. If you east enders there need anything, be sure and give us a hollar.

Snow White and I grew up in Port Arthur, TX and rode out several hurricanes. After the last one, I decided that never ever again would I stay! Good Luck

I was down in Houston on bidness yesterday, driving the backroads home to avoid some of the mass exodus. Criminy!

If you're staying, just remember that Ron White line:

"It's not the wind that'll kill ya, it's the sh*t in the wind."

Looks like Ron won't be anywhere in the area:

Ron White Arrest

Hey Mike,

As of 8 this morning, we are still thinking of riding the storm out. Got the plywood on the windows most of the day yesterday and moved lots of stuff around in our garages off the floor.

We have had water in both of our garages before and it sucked. Some stuff got ruined so we are trying to avoid that this time around.

We still have the option of leaving right before the storm hits and will head to Mom's home in San Antonio.

Surfside is already showing a surge of water. It will most likely be covered with water again.

Good luck. See you on the other side of Ike.

As of 9 PM we didn't even have any rain... only in the last hour or so has the wind become a consistent push, and we've got some squalls blowing through. It's coming out of the North (seems odd but that's what it is), and that's good as far as we're concerned. Once the eye passes over us, which it damn near will go over my house... the winds should shift to the south, which is also a protected side for us. So I think we'll be fine, but we've got a few hours to go till the eye gets here.
