My good friend Ken had a heart attack saturday nite. I went to visit him yesterday in the hospital, he was doing ok and I think he's going to recover.

I'm glad he's making progress. My cousin, who is only 64, had a major heart attack in February. He supposedly was pretty much dead three times, but was brought back by the medical staff.

The odd thing about his case is that he was the poster boy for excellent habits. No tobacco, no alcohol, very little red meat or fat, plenty of exercise. He's been monitoring his heart status since his Dad died when my cousin was only 21.

Now how did they miss this through all his checks and screenings? He had been in to see his specialist the week before the heart attack, and nothing was discovered.

It turns out that his arteries were nearly completely blocked, due to his hereditary condition. It was missed because he did not complain about how tired seemingly minor physical activities made him feel.

Scared, literally to fear of death, his younger brother who is only 62 went in for a SPECT test at my urging.

The SPECT test revealed significant damage areas, and so he is going to be taking actions to deal with the genetic issues in advance of an actually potentially lethal event.

Any of you who get tired quickly with relatively low levels of physical exertion ought to discuss this with your primary care physician. If you have any genetic history of heart attacks in earlier generations of your family, it is even more important that you have this discussion.

Ask them specifically about the SPECT test. It is no longer expensive, it is not invasive, and it will reveal whether or not you have issues that should be addressed BEFORE you are in the actual process of dying.

BTDT, three years ago. Mine was a "little" incident, although the doc says there's no such thing as little heart attacks. Never lost consciousness, never had to be revived, was just very short of breath after my 3 or 4 times a week bicycle ride. After an hour of sweating and panting, and then my fingers getting tingly (thinking to myself, "Hey, I've seen that on a list somewhere....") I had my daughter-in-law take me to the ER. They put a stent in one artery that was 50% and I was instantly feeling better, sweats stopped, breathing recovered, but they wouldn't let me go home. Weird, that.... I was watching the screen where he could see the device going up the femoral artery and around the aorta and down into the heart, the little device dropping off the mesh tube at just the right place to open up that artery. It was actually kinda cool to watch! The ER cardiologist did say to me that it was a pleasant change to be conversing with his patient during the procedure! :)

Anyway, my point is, if you get funny feelings like that, even if there's no pain (there wasn't,) GET CHECKED OUT!

Best wishes for your friend's recovery!!!!
