I've known about 10 people who've had lasik. Out of that, I've known 3 people who had 'less than ideal' results. I personally will probably never consider it because of this. However, my girlfriend just had it done this past weekend even with my doom and gloom stories. She is thrilled with the results and is OK with some minor irritation over the last few days.

That minor irritation? Would it be that she can now see clearly who she's been dating all this time?

Maybe.....but you definitely have the warm temperature advantage (& it's only 4 months & 8 days :p )

So not to hi-jack the gauge thread I will start anew. How many of you have had lasik? Did it work? Would you do it again? I am needing glasses now and they are a pain, one for reading little letters and one for road signs, mostly at night. After hearing horror stories you are afraid to take the plunge. Kind of like the ticking, not many but by the reports you would think all FJR's do.
Mike, you should PM "Sharp" up in WA. and get his take on it.

Dang! Well don't let her get her hearing fixed there Arty-farty. Now, after seeing yer ugly mug in all it's gory detail, if she also all of a sudden can hear your incessant whining clearly, your finished.

:tease:

Had Lasik surgery about 8 years ago (age 40). Doctor slightly undercorrected one eye (my "short distance eye") on purpose, after a consult during which he said I'd soon be facing presbyopia ("old folks eyes" or the inability to read menus in dim light.) Good call on his part. I'm still dealing with worse-than-without-Lasik presbyopia (lots of reading glasses around the house), but the advantages of playing basketball, blading, motorcycling, etc. without prescription glasses FAR outweigh having to slide on drugstore glasses at a restaurant sometimes.

N addtoin, I dnot' nedd glssses to ues myy kybaorrd aynmoore.

Wasn't intentional, but, my left eye ended up 20-20 and my right eye is 20-25. He said he could get it to 20-20 without a problem, however, it would shorten the time that will pass before I need reading glasses. So, I stuck with it. I don't even notice it unless I'm looking at an eye chart.

well, i just spent a half hour visiting on the phone with the recepionist at a lasik centre in kelowna. she laughed when i told her that i'm far sighted and have an astigmatism. sure enough the technology has come a long way. she said that the majority of their patients have astigmatism.

one thing that may disqualify me is my multiplesclerosis. one of the first questions she asked was if i had any autoimmune diseases. she's going to check with the doc and get back to me later today.

so, i might be getting my eyes wilbered this year.

i can't even watch someone put contacts in. they better have good drugs to keep me still.

derek

I won't lie to you. You're wide awake during the procedure and it's unnerving to say the least. After the anesthetic wears off you get about 4 hours of some of the worst pain you're ever likely to experience made worse by the fact that you can't touch. Then it's like somebody pulls the pain plug. Weird. And I'd do it again tomorrow.

Huh? I didn't experience any pain. Took an extra valium before I left the eye docs and went home and slept. Woke up and drove to dinner.

Wow! My little remark about getting Lasik in another thread must of stirred up some interest I guess. lol Ditto to the above statement. No pain at all. Just some dryness, which they give you drops for. Do it! You won't regret it. If it dark I do need reading glasses, but other than that its great! Do it for yourself.

They warned me about the pain, it was even on the paperwork to expect about 4 hours of "moderate" pain once the anesthetic wore off and it was 4 hours almost to the minute. And it really was like somebody pulled the plug. One minute intense pain the next nothing. only a little dryness. I don't know why they couldn't have used an anesthetic that lasted an extra 4 hours. I like to think I have at least a normal tolerance for pain..maybe I'm just a big puss.

But seriously... :****:

well it seems laser eye surgery is contraindicated in ms patients. i'm not symptomatic and i don't understand the reasoning, so i've requested an opinion from a the neurologists at the ms clinic at ubc. unfortunately, my neurologist passed away so i might not get a reply.

i did learn one other thing on the web that bothers me. patients who may be future candidates for cataract (iol) implants should not get lasiks. cataracts are so common with age that i'd hate to not have that option if the time comes. does anyone know any more about that?

i have so much more to learn about all this.

derek
