I just sent the following blurb for his monthly newsletter to my buddy, the director of the Berkeley Faculty Club on campus (now I just have to finish a couple small things on the painting and sign it):
"In September the Faculty Club will be exhibiting a large-scale oil painting by Cal alum and current staff member James Burleigh. The painting is four feet tall by six feet wide and entitled 'Tunneling: The Cal Band Relaxes in North Tunnel Before the Big Game.'
"Last November Hans approached Cal Band Director Bob Calonico, introduced himself, and said, 'I have a crazy idea!' To that Bob replied, 'I like it already: I love crazy ideas!' Hans proposed to create a large painting of the Cal band at his own expense; all Bob had to agree to would be to hang it in the band room. Bob agreed, they shook on it, and Hans got to work. This viewing at the Faculty Club will be the only opportunity to see the painting before it is permanently hung in the band room."
