I've been (nicely) arguing with my g/f about getting new riding pants. She insists that she wants to go to Chaps instead (in her head that they are "sexy"). From a safety standpoint and shear looks my stand I guess means nutt'n. I mean I can see it on a Hogg but not on a sportier bike like my FJR or the Beemer.

Am I just pig-headed that I don't like Chaps? Any of uze-guyz whom may have wives or g/f's that wear these things on a Feej. Her theme (lol) is purple so she has these leather ones picked out... (yikes!)

I sitll have two pair of assless-chaps from my cruiser days, my pair and a pair for the ladies. Oddly enough, the women in my life all prefer wearing them as opposed to regular riding pants. Truth be told, I like them wearing them but mostly off the bike > :)

First heavy rain should take care of function over ... "Theme". Just lean forward during the next downpour for maximum effect.

Klim "traverse" pants have that chap like look. Check out their line, as now they have gender specific items.

I understand where you guys are coming from. My girl (Amy) wants to try textile chaps for 2 reasons. 1- She is short and she hates how the pants we bought for her and all that she has tried on feel to her that they ride so high on her abdomen. I explained how that is a good the because of rain not coming under the jacket, blah, blah, blah. 2- I don't know why but she has low selfesteem and she thinks that the pants with the padding make her look like a fat cow. Sigh... Just can't win with these lady folk! Women don't listen to reason!

I don't let anyone ride in my cage without a seat belt. The car doesn't go into drive if the red light on the dash is on.

As you are responsible for her safety you should have the right to dictate, and I do mean dictate, the level of safety gear any pillion wears on board your FJR.

Jus' sayin'.

I guess if she will not ride with you unless you let her dress the way she wants, then it's up to you to decide how to handle it. Personally, I think she should wear full gear for riding and save the chaps for other recreation.

The mental image of Bungie wearing nothing but chaps scares the crap outa me.... but maybe at last we'll find out why he gets lost... never know where that thing is pointing!

KJ, as an ATTGAT kind of guy as I am, knowing that any unintended separation from your motorcycle seat won't end well........ You've made your point to the GF, now it is time for you to make a decision knowing sometimes you can lead a horse to water, but......... Would you rather be right or would you rather be happy?

So here goes, for the women who want to look stylish and have some adjustable draw strings for a more form-fitting fit, I highly recommend a look at these...... They have some good protection and are pretty good for riding gear.

My $0.02 - chaps can look great on a gal, but only if she's got the dumper to pull it off. Sorry if that sounds bad, but in my little home town we have a large (and I mean large in multiple meanings) group of folks who show up on Saturday mornings on their hogs with most of the lady-folk wearing chaps. I would say that 90+% should NOT be wearing those as it tends to even further exagerate the size of the posterior, but they do anyway.

For full disclosure, I would love to feel confident in walking around town with my shirt off but I realize that I don't have the body to pull it off so I don't...... I wish others would show the same restraint but since its still a relatively free country, let it bulge !!!!!

From the woman's perspective, yes chaps are sexy but imo moreso off the bike. :D I used to wear chaps when I first started riding. A Brit friend of mine looked at my rear and said, "Don't you like your bottom??" I said I did. He said,"Well you might not like it so much when it goes sliding down the road." Ah those Brits... Needless to say, I got full riding pants after that. The comment about weather affecting the uncovered regions is spot on... if it was cold out, my butt was as cold as a frozen butterball turkey. And rain? If you like looking like you peed your pants, I guess that's okay if it's your thing... but definitely not sexy. YMMV ;)

I think you should spank her with chaps on and then the other gear on...see which she likes better. Well maybe that won't get the point across. :D

Take your belt sander and rev it up. Tell her that you'll belt sand her *** in both of those get ups...which does she prefer to wear?

...uhhh, never mind. :)

Seriously, KJ?

Of all the FJR (and other sport/sport touring bike) people you've ridden with, how many of them are wearing those half-assed (hehe - clever, huh? I just came up with that :D ) chaps??

I have a pair and I've worn them around town but I haven't had them on in a couple of years. And I wouldn't freaking dream of wearing them on a trip.

I'm not touching that "looks sexy" sh*t :glare:

FWIW, I find ATGATT - on guys AND gals (ok - some guys and gals) - hot, hot, hot

My two cents

Hugs and kisses

If she doesn't want to wear actual riding pants then get overpants. They work, they offer excellent protection, and you can remove them in public and have normal clothes for walking around in. Well, not a dress, maybe, but jeans or slacks, even shorts. I wear Tour Master Venture Air overpants myself, and have crash tested a pair of them. Twice.

She won't have to appear "in public" with bulging padded and armored legs, but she won't lose any of that precious skin should she get separated from the bike.

As mentioned, overpants would be good, but be sure to get the ones with the full or almost full length zippers and as attractive as possible. Let her see how easy it is to get in and out of those as you get off the bike and before you go into the restaurant or other area. Getting a pair for yourself might also help so that you both are removing/putting on the pants right at the bike.

From a former fire chief who responded to too many motorcycle accidents, you really need to stand your ground but based on genuine concern because you wouldn't want anything to happen to this special person in your life.
