I have long used these in both airplanes and boats. Pilots as a matter of course file flight plans, especially if flying under instrument flight rules (IFR). While it is a good idea to file a flight plan even if you are not going to use flight following, many don't through laziness or concern that they may forget to close their plan. I forgot once and was saved by the controller who was called at the beginning of the search. He knew me since I landed there a lot and had my cell #. Could have been VERY expensive. I use a Uniden combo VHF + GPS + EPIRB. It is portable. About the size of a large VHF radio. It is WAAS enabled so it broadcasts my position with any radio contact or when the emergency button is used. The downside is that these only last 3 - 5 hrs if well charged which is why we us a class 1 EPIRB also on the boat. Very big but lasts for 4 days. The portable units are available for $300 - 600. I travel with it always for medical alert reasons. Here's another some what pricier option. EPIRB
