Here's another some what pricier option. EPIRB
I have long used these in both airplanes and boats. Pilots as a matter of course file flight plans, especially if flying under instrument flight rules (IFR). While it is a good idea to file a flight plan even if you are not going to use flight following, many don't through laziness or concern that they may forget to close their plan. I forgot once and was saved by the controller who was called at the beginning of the search. He knew me since I landed there a lot and had my cell #. Could have been VERY expensive. I use a Uniden combo VHF + GPS + EPIRB. It is portable. About the size of a large VHF radio. It is WAAS enabled so it broadcasts my position with any radio contact or when the emergency button is used. The downside is that these only last 3 - 5 hrs if well charged which is why we us a class 1 EPIRB also on the boat. Very big but lasts for 4 days. The portable units are available for $300 - 600. I travel with it always for medical alert reasons.

Most current cell phones also have hidden GPS coordinant broadcasting capability. They're usefull if you are on a mountain top or other high ground but not so effective in a deep valley.

I just returned from a 4.5 day 2000 mile ride through NC/VA/WV/TN/KY/MD, all back roads no interstate. I thought of this as I was riding but there was no way I could inform anybody of my route as it was all seat of the pants.

I used my GPS and maps and picked roads that linked the best looking ones together for the day often taking a turn for a better road as I saw it. There were very few homes/people or anything else around most of the time and I just pray for safe riding.

Most of my rides are vague and I take turns as I see them. I also ride alone most of the time. Not a good recipie for safety but hopefully my 25k miles/yr will continue with my 25 yrs of not dropping a bike!!

I think of it as taking personal responsibility. The thing reports accurate speeds. If it shows I was traveling at x rate of speed, then I probably was. If I deny speeding I am a liar. Which is worse? Self incrimination or perjury? Until they can give me speeding tickets retroactively, I'll keep using it.

When I am out alone I will call and check in if I have a route change. Most of the time I text the info to Michelle.

When Michelle and I are out togetther we file a plan and call at the end of day for a check in. However, if we have a route change mid-day we text the info, and call my wifes cell and leave updated info on Voicemail. If we miss a call in our route keeper has her passcode to check the voicemail for route change.

I also carry a survival laser on my while on the bike.

Link

When I was part of the Reno search and recovery team (HASTY Team) we found someone with one of these lasers in less then 30 minutes.

How many others take this precaution? Comments? Thoughts?
I leave a rough idea of my route, but my routes are typically very, very loosely defined. I have general call in times (carry a calling card for when I have no cell service). On my cross-country trip next year, I'll be subscribing to the cell-phone locator service, or using a GPS locator/transmitter to allow location tracking for me and the group.

No one to tell or care...oh wait...if it did happen my sister would be rich....so like I said no one to tell or care....not even me  .....so no loss....so just smile  & keep on riding....
 Ditto

All excellent information for the un -expected when on a trip. I to fall into that category of taking trip accross country riding by my self. When june 10th 07 comes I will be leaving for Oregoncity, Oregon and from there I plan on riding in Washingthon ,Idaho than back in Oregon than back home to Woodland Ca. I phone in and give a route which I try to keep to but not always as you know things change when riding and memory laspes occur when having fun riding.

How about this question, Do you set a max. speed that you take your corners so you do not crash and burn on any turn? Me I set 20mph above the posted speed for any corner and live by that rule when riding by my self. What is the hurry?

I have that On Star in my car through GM wonder how I could get it to work on the bike? Anyone know chime in. They can locate you and, you also have phone service through satalite any where in the US.

I thought Onstar uses the cell phone network, not satellite. ?

I don't look at my speedometer in turns. I ride as fast as I can and still feel safe. My speedo is my butt cheeks.

That is good thinking, I always leave a map of my route on the fridge when traveling along with numbers of those i am traveling with if possible, and carry emergeny contact infor on my person, if i am unable to make the call, plus have emerg phone numbers in cell phone, but we can not always garrantee that I'll have cell service.
