Pretty simple question, which way to go liability or comprehensive? Liability is only $64/yr whereas comp is $208/year. While $208 isn't outrageous it really depends on replacement costs. I would have a 500/500 deductible for comp coverage so the missing piece to my puzzle is how much does a side panel cost to replace?

Thanks,

RCook

Many online sources for specific FJR parts are located here including the perennial recommendation of talking to Gary McCoy at Mondak.

The real question you need to ask yourself is, can you afford just liability?

Laying down the FeeJ on a simple low side could still cost a few grand in parts, etc. $208 for five years is only another grand for "insurance" if you were to get in some trouble. Your call really.

Also what about uninsured motorists? Here in California it's state law, ALL must have liability insurance. You know how that works, chances are good you get in an accident here in Cali the other person won't have insurance. Then what? Although it's not Iowa either....

Just sayin'....

Your deductible is rather high, but then that makes it cheaper on the cost of comprehensive insurance. I think mine is $250 deductible, and about $250/year full coverage.

factor in on a "moderate" collision claim which of course means it's your fault,

the 20% raise in total premium for three years against the amount of the claim less deductible

Unless my vehicle is totaled and for a substantial amount, I self cover a collision incident and don't make a claim

I put $$$ in a savings account for future repairs of my vehicles which are over 5years old

that being said, if an uninsured motorist causes you property damage like totaling your bike and it's their fault,

collision is good to have because your insurance will kick in to pay you the claim less deductible with no premium increase

you can get uninsured property (UP?) which would kick in like above, but your bike is not covered for an incident which is your fault. I've found this coverage not that much less premium than full collision, so I go the route of full collision on my vehicles.

let's ride safe and be careful out there,

Mike in Nawlins' - with lotsa uninsured motorists around here

Well looking a just cowling and saddle bag costs it would seem that comp is cheap.

I wasn't clear in my OP, I do have under/un-insured I'm simply trying to decide if I get 'pay me to fix it' insurance or 'I pay to fix it'. Looks like the 'pay me' is the way to go.

If you have good health insurance consider dropping uninsured motorists Bodily Injury coverage. If you are going to buy collision coverage consider not buying uninsured motorist property damage coverage. Take the highest deductibles for collision and comprehensive you are comfortable with. Personally, I take $1,000 because I want my coverage to help me with a large loss or totaled vehicle, not small claims. Use the savings to buy higher liability limits. A bike can be replaced or repaired pretty cheaply compared to being sued and losing a $1,000,000 judgment. The idea of insurance is to protect your financial assets. Liability coverage is the most important component. Buy as much as you can afford.

With patience you can get one in perfect condition on Ebay in the $150 range, you might have to wait to get the right color. If you don't have frame sliders you will have other damage, so figure $40 for a new slider. Your mirror is scratched, haven't seen many of those on Ebay, so there is another $90. You also scratched the bag, so it needs a touch up paint job. Figure $100. That's for a minimal tip over, sliding costs more. ;)
