Once in high school I raced my 10-speed down a hill, through a stop sign, not seeing the truck from the left...as it was on a college campus and there was a big ornamental pillar surrounded by bushes. (thus the reason for the stop sign...

I hit the brakes, but still hit the rear tires of the truck. Happy to hit the side of the tire and not the underneath surface.
Bike just didn't ride the same after that.

The pol' had heard that most crashes occur within 3 miles of home,,,, and he was getting away from home as fast as he could.
