The West Viriginia DNR is throwing up there hands in frustration because they can't control the deer population. It seems that "Bambi" is bent-for-leather to committ sucide and maybe take some human types with them as they travel to the "other side of the river". Shoutin' at em' doesn't work, blowin' your horn doesn't either. And those little whistles "blowin' at em....they don't work either. So, with a one in forty-five chance of hitting a deer the DNR has turned to a "higher power " to solve the problem.....heaven help us! It's the WV Legislature.!

Maybe you need one of these:

Firepower

It's really too bad that we had to go and kill all the large predators in the Lower 48 that helped control deer populations, but I suppose there is little difference between hitting a deer on a motorcycle and hitting a wolf.

I definitely need one of those. Is there a Techmount available?

We're in the Maryland county that is just north of DC and there was just a big article in the paper about how the County Council decided a year ago to allow much more wide-spread bow hunting. There've just been so many accidents, the Council finally gave up on the "be nice" crowd. I was talking to a biologist and the highest sustainable deer density is something like 80 per square mile, while we in some places are over 110.

Yup, you guys down that way definitely have a problem with the deer. When I was down at EOM, I'd never seen that many LIVE ones, let alone dead ones on the road. That was just stupid! Every ride I saw them. Christ! You guys have more deer down their than we have chipmunks up here. It was so bad I actually altered my riding style more toward the centerline track when I usually would have ridden on the shoulder track in the hopes of giving me that fraction of a second (HA!) more to see a deer on the side of the road.

It was the only downside to my trip - and I've commented to everybody up here on the number of deer I saw down there. Freakin' dangerous!

Declare open season on the damn things. Of course, the meat marketing boards will have a **** hemmorage over that.

Money to be made here, pups. Hit a deer?.....call ArcticFreezums.....we will collect your deer and send it to alaska for human consumption. They will be properly spliced and diced and then frozen for your friendly inuits up nord. Hunert bucks a deer. "You hit 'em.....we **** 'em".

You guys laugh, but down here, we really do that. I have gone to plenty of wrecks involving deer where the deer has a broken hip, broken back, or two broken legs. They're not really that hurt, but can't be fixed cuz it's too expensive. One call to game and fish, one round to the head, and not long after, I have a gutted deer waiting for the processor. I have two does in the freezer right now, and my brother has an elk...lucky *******.

Sadly your experience is "right on" . The new stats as annouced by the WV DNR put us at number 1 nationally. What amazes me is the Harley riders around here ride with "abandon" in the "high-traffic deer" areas. They claim their loud pipes scare the deer. Ha! My son is a General Surgeon at a major med center in Huntington and a rider. He has told me many stories of put these HR bodies back together after they tried to "make out with Bambi".

Ride Safe

I have done my part... Shot one this year and my buddy shot 4, all doe's. They need to create a taskforce that hunts them down, slaughters them and provides the meat to soup kitchens and such. In fact you should know that inspite of the fact that WV generally has a very low crime rate the auto insurance is high here because of deer strikes. this past year I had probably 20 encounters and at least 5 were close calls.

A WV resident can legally take 9 deer/season. The "task force" is in place. It is just a matter of inspiration. If everyone took just one doe out of the backyard, problem solved.

Hunters for the Hungry program will take all the legal deer you wish to provide. I move we petition Uncle Joe Manchin and his cronies for a box of free ammo for all licensed deer hunters...costs more than tires for his Harley nowadays!

Only 20??? You gotta get out more! It is definitely scary.

Ride like the forest rats are out to get ya, cause...

Ya' know you got a point there but the season is too short...unless your a bow hunter. Extending the season could make a big difference.

Yep, I agree longer season would help. Perhaps an early muzzleloader season like VA has (safer, shorter range when leaves are on) or perhaps a slugs only season? But the current gun season essentially runs from Thanksgiving to Christmas (2 days after this year) and by late Dec, you have to HUNT yer hind end off to find a deer in daylight.

I know! We will just get the bear hunters to lobby in Charleston for the deer hunters and then we can hunt deer year round and turn loose a fresh pack of radio-collared dogs every time a deer is jumped or crosses a road mid-chase.

Just to be clear thats an estimate of total encounters, some encounters had 20 deer in the street :) And I ahve to say if you stay away from riding at dusk dark and dawn you can really cut down on the number of close calls.

Honestly though, it was the first deer I ever shot and it was quite a nasty task to get it from dead to in the freezer. but I will look into the hunters for hungry program; as much as I hate the damn things in the road i cant see waisting one then waisting it if you get my meaning.

Remember the day we went up to Black water falls and and Cannan valley? I think we had at least 6 or 7 in the road or near the road moments on that day alone. We should do that again.

yeah I think a longer season would be in order.
