This is an example of using Google Maps. Its very easy to detail out a route and make small changes to pick up great things along the way. This is a route from Las Vegas to Yakima, WA. I have set the permissions to allow that map to be edited by anyone, but I could invite "collaborators" by email. Basically, the idea here is you can ask for suggestions, and people familiar with parts of the route can insert waypoints (even their homes if you want an overnight invite). And you can accept or reject the route changes.
The route I put in takes you through Death Valley to Lone Pine, then up to Lake Tahoe and takes the western shore route past Emerald Bay to Truckee, then North off 395 to Sierraville which is normally easily passable at that time of year, rejoining 395 in Susanville to go to Lakeview Oregon. It then takes the same route you set for Yakima. Many variations could be input by others, but this is a suggestion. Break your trip into manageable segments with hard beginning and ending waypoints you want, then let collaborators suggest some ways to make it more interesting.
