Loose bags

After reading this, and remembering that I still hadn't Lock-Tite'd my lock assembly, I tried to take a bag off of my '06 while it was locked on the bike. Even though there is play in the bags, there is no way possible for my bags to come off unless something breaks or it is unlocked and removed the way it is supposed to. It only moves about 1/4" upwards, so not enough for the tabs to come anywhere close to coming off. It also moves about 3/4" front to back (about 3/8" in each direction from center). And, both bag's lock assemblies have now been secured with Lock-Tite.

Now all 4 mounting points are cushioned with rubber, and bags don't move around.

All 4? Mine only mounts in 3 places, the two top tabs and the leading edge front tabs that lock on the rubber thingee. Or, are you counting the locking tab that moves up from inside the bag as the 4th?

Bags lock with the two upper "hangers" into the recesses, and the locking bar "pushes" upward into the center, lower facing recess. There is a rubber spacer in the center recess, Yamaha Part#: 3P6-21652-00-00.

It doesn't take too long for that rubber spacer to compress a bit and the bags to feel somewhat loose, but that's from lateral motion of the bag "hangers" in the two outer/upper recesses. Without some appreciable wear, there simply is no way for that "three fingers lock mechanism" to release accidentally. So even if it does feel a bit "loose", it won't come unlocked.

The safety pin mod through the bottom "saddle lock" tab is a neat idea. It should certainly help hold the bag in case of a severe impact. But personally, I would prefer the bag to leave the bike rather than absorb that type of impact on the bike.

If I was going to shim anything in order to remove some of the free motion, it would be a thin rubber shim on the inside,vertical edge of the two upper recesses. That would reduce the lateral play for the bag hanger tabs. But it would also make the bag more of a PITA to mount/dismount because alignment would be much more critical.

On my bags I glued a small rectangular piece of clear Plexiglas to the top of the sliding post in the bag itself. This pulls the bags tighter into the top slots and worked really well for me.

I just lightly sanded the slider on top and the Plexiglas pieces then used super glue to glue the pieces on. Just make sure that they aren't larger than the sliding piece that goes down into the bag when off for clearance.

The Plexiglas I used was about 1/8 inch thick or maybe a little less. The handles now lock into the closed position now and it is much better.

I suppose the rubber pieces in the top would be the easiest to do though.

Just found this loose bag thing on my son's 06 FJR. The left bag can be removed when in the locked position. We took both bags off and closed them like they would be on the bike. The sliding tab that goes up when you push the handle down on the bag (inside of the saddle bag) is shorter on the left side versus the right side. This has not been a problem but he caught it last night.

Is there anyway to get into where the sliding tab is? Saw pop rivets but even if you remove them it doesn't appear that you would be able to mess with the linkage to see if anything had come loose or adjust it.

The left side sliding tab is 1/4 inch lower than the right, which makes for a sloppy fit.

Any suggestions?

The mechanism inside the bag has 'slipped' (maybe from trying to lock the bag on without allowing for the tab to enter the slot?).

Hold the tab firmly (with vise grip?) and move the handle to 'slip' the mechanism in the direction desired.

Concur on the "slipped" part. I had one like this happen and it felt like it "popped" when I got a bit rambuctious with it...and the tab was full of grit. It's like there's some gear or worm mechanism in there and it's one tooth or cog off.

In my case I was under warranty and had the sidebag replaced. If I wasn't I would have tried the same trick to unpop the mechanism. And if that didn't work I would have performed surgery to look underneath it all.

On my last trip with my 08, I noticed at the end of the day that my left sidebags rear hanger had come loose and was off to the side. It had gouged thru the protective clear plastic and scratched the paint. I thought I had just not put it on correctly. The next morning I took extra care mounting it. At the end of the day when I was unloading the bike I noticed it had done it again. This time I remounted it,making sure I had done it right, and pulled up and down on it. Well, it comes loose pretty easy on the rear hook. I tried the other side with similar force and it didn't come loose. I'm still under warranty, so I hope the dealership will take care of it. My old 04 never did this and I remember pulling up and down on those bags pretty hard to check them.

Ignacio, I'm assuming the new sidebag you got under warranty cured the problem. Right?
